Nuts and Bolts
We are planning for about 20 volunteers to be honored on May 8th at our volunteer breakfast. Bob Evans will be catering the meal. Certified staff preferred to make a donation in order to help with the cost. I'm asking for all certified to make a $10 donation and I'll cover the remaining amount. We'd also appreciate any staff available to assist with serving the meals to our parents. If anyone is talented at planning a quick skit, song, or poem to honor our wonderful Volunteers, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Supply Orders for each team are due to Sarah by Monday.
Grade levels should be working on class placements. Go to the Google Shared folder. Choose EOY Procedures, Class Placements, Class lists sheet. You can turn in the pink and blue sheets to me in 17-18 Class sets by grade level.
Curriculum and Instruction
FTCSC DIBELS GOALS: Accuracy 85% and Fluency 80%
Boost those Skills:
Tape-Assisted Reading: In tape assisted reading, students read along in their books as they hear a fluent reader read the book on an audiotape or through technology. For tape assisted reading, you need a book at a student’s approximate independent reading level and a tape recording of the book read by a fluent reader at about 80-100 words per minute. The tape should not have sound effects or music. For the first reading, the student should follow along with the tape, pointing to each word in his or her book as the reader reads it. Next, the student should try to read aloud along with the tape. Reading along with the tape should continue until the student is able to read the book independently, without the support of the tape.
Model Fluent Reading: By listening to good models of fluent reading, students learn how a reader’s voice can help written text make sense. Read aloud daily to your students. By reading effortlessly and with expression, you are modeling for your students how a fluent reader sounds during reading.
Please review the DIBELS SWAT Schedule below. Remember, each grade level will be DIBELing their own grade level, but not their own class. IA's will cover classrooms and the one teacher not DIBELing will be responsible for moving students into the room quickly and quietly. Sarah will be giving you class rosters next week to write down any important notes for the DIBELing teacher to be aware of. Please plan quiet activities that your class can be working on while waiting for their turn.
Reaching ALL Learners
Embed Social Skills: At every grade level, use a variety of classroom strategies that strengthen social and emotional skills.
Teach basic but crucial meet-and-greet skills.
When students introduce themselves to other classmates, teach students to face one another, make eye contact, smile, and shake hands.
Discipline through positive relationships, not by exerting power or authority.
Avoid such negative directives as “Don’t be a wise guy!” or “Sit down immediately!”
Instead say, “We’ve got lots to do in class today. When you’re ready to learn, please have a seat.”
