The Connection Week 10 Term 1

Huapai District School 8th April 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

I hope you managed to have a break and a happy Easter. It seems strange to have had Easter outside of the school holidays.

I have been looking at attendance recently. Here are some interesting stats:

  • The average daily attendance in New Zealand schools is just under 90% (88.6% in 2019, 90.1 in 2018). The average for Waitakere schools is 89%.

Our current attendance rate is 94.4%.

  • Regular attendance is defined as being at school for at least 90% of the time. NZ wide this sits at 58% (meaning nearly 40% of NZ children do not attendance more than 90% of the available class time). This is a frightening piece of data.

Our current regular attendance rate (2021) is 86%.

Getting your child to school, on time and ready to learn is just so important.

Thank you for what you are doing.

Student Of The Week

Liam says “The best thing about Huapai District School is the pool. I love it! What makes Huapai District School better than other schools is the freedom on the playground. We can play on whichever playground we like."

Battle Of The Brains

Having won the Champion of Champions Battle of the Brains, the Year 7 & 8 team went on to compete in the teachers vs students All-Stars Final. It was a tough competition; after losing to the teachers in the trivia round, our students came back strong in the word and number challenges, and after a draw in the puzzle round, they emerged as the overall winners! Congratulations on a well-deserved win, students.

Wine Bottle Tops And Can Tabs For Charity

Jack and Alana Rangi are involved in fundraising for Kidney Kids NZ!

They are collecting can tabs and wine bottle tops (not beer bottle caps) as per the images below for recycling.

Could you please collect these over the course of the year, and send them into school regularly to the collection containers in Room 3 or 4. They will then take it to a scrap metal man and make a direct dollar donation on behalf of the school.

Huapai Plus Holiday Programme

Yummy Apple Stickers

It’s time to start collecting the apple stickers again! Every year we collect these stickers and bag cut outs which count towards a share of $200,00 free DG sports gear. There is a printable form attached to this newsletter, or children can collect one from the office. Sticker sheets should be returned to school when they are complete.
