Language Arts

We started our Tradition Literature Unit this week. Traditional literature includes tall tales, folk tales, legends, myths, and fairytales. Our first focus is tall tales including Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, and Pecos Bill. We have discussed the difference between exaggeration and hyperbole. Can your child tell you the difference? We wrote our own "whoppers", or hyperbole claims. We wrote and illustrated them on fish "tails". They are quite funny! We will be reading different versions of these tall tales, then compare and contrast the details.

Last week our word study words were contractions. We practiced that contractions can be read in a sentence as two words. When in doubt if a contraction should be used, try out the two words that make up that contraction to see if the phrase still makes sense. “Your right” and “you’re right” have two different meanings.

Our next poetry performance, “The Pilgrims Came”, will be on Wednesday, November 18th. Students should remember to bring their poem paper to class that day.

Also, our first book report covering a nonfiction book is due on Friday. You're child should be close to finishing their book, if they haven't already finished it. Below is the rubric that will be used for grading the Book Report.

Fund Run This Week!

We enjoyed the Fund Run Pep rally on Monday! Our class has chosen Hubacz's Horned Owls as our team name. The students are looking forward to the Fund-Run on Thursday, November 19th at 10:30am. The track will be set up at Cattail park, adjacent to Galatas. All are welcome! Pledges are still being accepted at www.funruntime.com.

The Third Grade Feast is Friday

We've been learning all about the Pilgrims in Social Studies and look forward to our authentic Thanksgiving Feast. Thank you to all who have volunteered to participate. We are still hoping to get at least two volunteers to be our Indians for our brief reader's theater. Each student also needs to have a mug and cloth napkin or dish towel to use as a napkin for the feast. You can send it in anytime this week. Additional information about Friday’s Pilgrim Feast will come home in the PAWS binder. Please also note our Pilgrim Games time is 12:00-12:30 (this will replace recess) and the feast (lunch) time is 12:30 in the classroom. No other lunch is needed that day, unless your child has food allergies.
