Colt Corner
Colleyville Middle School
September 2, 2022
Colts,
We had a great week here at CMS! Tuesday’s curriculum night was a huge success as we had a packed campus with overflowing classes and halls full of our wonderful Colt families! Thank you for your continued support with all of our CMS events.
The family involvement at CMS is at an all time high in so many ways, including our PTA membership. For the fourth straight year, our PTA membership has grown, setting a new school record, thank you! If you haven't joined our PTA, or are still looking for a way to get connected to the campus, be sure to check out our PTA/Volunteer/Dad’s Club information below in the Repeated Section of the newsletter.
As we usher in the new month of September, we begin our fall season events and sports. We would love for you all to come out and join us Wednesday evening at our first football and volleyball home games to support our Colts. On Friday, we will have our first hawaiian luau themed pep rally. Have your Colt ready to join the fun on Friday, dressed in some fun hawaiian spirit wear!
Thank you again for helping make CMS a great school with a great positive culture for our Colts! Enjoy the three-day weekend and we will see our Colts on Tuesday!

Student ID's
Starting Tuesday, September 6, 2022, all CMS students must have on a 22-23 student ID badge. Students who do not have on a student ID badge will need to report to the main office where they may receive a replacement badge for $5. If the student does not have $5, the individual student account will be charged.
Thank you for your patience as we have worked diligently to provide ID badges for all CMS Colts. This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff at CMS.
Dress Code
Parents, we need your help with a dress code issue we are experiencing with our girls. While we know these shorts are wildly popular and trendy, unfortunately they are not compliant with GCISD’s dress code policy as outlined on page 65 of the 22-23 Student/Parent Handbook if they don't fall at mid-thigh. The shorts we are referencing are the Kiki Kona and other brands of flowy gym shorts or any other very short shorts. We have included a photo of the shorts for your convenience. If your student has a pair of these and is wanting to wear them to school we are asking for your partnership in reminding them to please not wear them to school. Thank you!

Counselors’ Corner (Sept. 5 - 9)
College, Career, & Military Readiness (CCMR):
Today was National College Colors Day! CMS students and staff wore our college gear to show our school pride as the college football season kicks off this weekend!
This school year counselors will spotlight CMS teachers and the colleges or universities they attended and share information with you about your teachers’ college experiences.
This week our Counselors’ College Spotlight was on Ms. Marcantel & Mrs. Barzottini!
Ms. Marcantel - 6th Grade GT ELA
Ms. Marcantel attended Texas A&M University which is in College Station, Texas. A&M’s mascot is an Aggie and their school colors are maroon and white. Ms. Marcantel says she took out loans to pay for college.
One thing that she wishes that she had learned before she went to college was how to properly study because studying became much more difficult after high school. Ms. Marcantel’s favorite thing about going to A&M was the friends that she made there and being part of her sorority, Chi Omega. She would encourage every student going to college to join clubs and organizations as a way of getting involved and making friends.
You can learn more about Texas A&M University here
Mrs. Barzonttini - Art I, II, & III
Mrs. B. attended San Jose State University in San Jose, California. San Jose State is known for its architectural, engineering, and design programs. Their school mascot is the Spartan and their school colors are blue and gold.
Mrs. B. paid for her college education by taking out student loans. She says the best thing about her college experience was realizing that she could do what she loved as a career. She chose to be an art teacher because she loves art and seeing students take pride in their work. But, before becoming an art teacher, Mrs. B. was a commercial interior designer who designed restaurants, offices, and retail spaces.
The one piece of advice she would give any student going to college is to not be intimidated.

8th Grade Parent Meeting (Oct. 13th):
8th grade parents, please mark your calendars! CMS counselors will be hosting a meeting for 8th grade parents on Thursday, Oct. 13th from 6-7 p.m. in the CMS cafeteria. They will discuss high school 4 year planning, course selection, and other important information related to transitioning to high school.
SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program
Parent Preview September 6, 10:00am & 6:00pm
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficulty for youths, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is the leading risk factor for suicide.
To proactively address these issues, GCISD offers depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program.
The SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program is designed for all secondary students grades 6-12.
The GCISD School Health Advisory Committee has previewed and recommended these programs for all GCISD secondary schools.
A parent preview of the program will be held on Tuesday September 6, 2022 at 10:00am and again at 6:00pm at the GCISD Administration Building – Board Room, 3051 Ira E. Woods, Grapevine, Texas 76051.
The OPT-OUT form needs to be returned BEFORE the date of your child’s presentation only if you do NOT want your child to participate.
For more information, including information about how to OPT your student out of the program, please click here: English Spanish If you have any additional questions you can contact Sarah Dumas (Student advocate counselor) at sarah.dumas@gcisd.net
SOS dates are as follows:
8th grade: September 13th (during social studies)
7th grade: September 20th (during social studies)
6th grade: September 21st (during pre-athletics/PE)
