WSD News
September 2021
Dear WSD Community,
It has been a wonderful week. Thank you to all of our students, staff, and parents for making our first few school days successful. I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting our schools and feeling the energy and excitement in the classroom. While we are not back to normal yet, we are together, and that is what is most important. I have no doubt it is going to be a great year!

WSD Strategic Plan
The Waterford School District Board of Education approved the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan. This plan was built through research and the input of students, staff, parents, and community members. It will be used as a road map for data-driven, continuous improvement. Guiding us through the next several years, this will unify and align our efforts to provide the foundation for achieving results, to realize the impossible, to seek excellence in all we do. You can learn more on our Strategic Plan webpage.
Free Breakfast & Lunch
Great news! All WSD students attending school in person have access to free, daily breakfast and lunch for the 2021-2022 school year. However, we do still need families to fill out the Free & Reduced lunch forms because they are tied to other important funding.
New Math Curriculum
In the spring of 2020, WSD adopted a new math program called enVision at the elementary level. This program combines problem-solving skills with traditional math algorithms in order to allow students to understand the concepts as well as computation. We are beginning our second year with this program and are pleased with how well students are performing.
Problem Based Learning
Starting this year, our students in grades K-8 will begin a new journey with Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL allows students to use investigative skills to solve real-world problems in different content areas. Research shows that using the knowledge you have learned to solve problems helps you to retain information and develop life-long skills. We are very excited about this hands-on approach to instruction that we will be implementing into our classrooms.
Investing in the Future
Over the summer, the Board of Education approved the purchase of our new English Language Arts program which is called Into Reading at the elementary level and Into Literature at the secondary level. The programs include phonics, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, writing, and reading activities. Students will have the opportunity to read and discuss quality literature at all levels and be able to apply their learned skills in other content areas.
Transportation
The Transportation Department is busy working to tighten up bus routes. We greatly appreciate all your assistance in making sure our students are getting to and from school safely. Below are a few important reminders:
- Over the next couple of weeks, please be sure to arrive at your child’s stop approximately 10 minutes early as we continue to evaluate our ridership and routes.
- Parents of kindergarteners, please make sure you or a family member is available to safely escort your child home.
- Only students can board our school buses. Parents can only enter with the bus driver’s permission.
Sweet Reads
Thank you to Principal Val Grimes, the Waterford Foundation, and all of the volunteers that made Sweet Reads a success this summer! Funding from the Waterford Foundation for Public Education and the Mary Lou Simmons Legacy Endowment made this program possible. The Sweet Reads Bookmobile made its way around designated Waterford neighborhoods providing endless opportunities to read this summer and lessen summer reading loss. It is such an incredible opportunity for our students. It made a huge impact on our community.
Summer Fun
Over the summer months, WSD students had a blast in Summer Child Care, built their own robot in Robot Boot Camp, and learned the fundamentals of soccer with professional players.
