A bacteria called Vibrio cholerae causes Cholera. However, the deadly affects of the disease are the result of a potent toxin called CTX that the bacteria produce in the small intestine. CTX binds to the intestinal walls, where it interferes with the normal flow of sodium and chloride.
Symptoms and Treatments
Symptoms of cholera include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and dehydration. Some treatments are re-hydration, just replacing lost fluids and electrolytes. Antibiotics are not a necessary part of the cholera treatment but will reduce the symptoms. Zinc supplements can also reduce the duration of the disease and the symptoms.
