Message From The Principal

While the weather may be cooling down, the activity of our Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) department is heating up. There is so much information to share regarding what our VPA students have been up to as of late, I will try to limit myself to just some of the highlights.

Last week, K-12 student artists across Fort Mill School District were celebrated at Discovery Education’s Headquarters in Charlotte, NC. The community support and attendance at this STEAM-focused reception was extraordinary. Students, art teachers, district leaders, and Discovery Education staff collaborated to prepare over 100 artworks for display. This grandiose exhibit of work was evidence of our highly-driven FMSD students who excel in collaboration, creative thinking, and artistic abilities.

While sideline dancing comes to a close with the end of football season, our FMHS Dance Team is already preparing to showcase their skills when basketball season returns. They are also gearing up for their annual Breakfast with Santa event, which serves as a fundraiser to support their major spring performance trip. (More details in the graphic below)

This fall has seen several members of the Fort Mill High School Concert Chorus highlighted for their skill. In October, 6 members of the ensemble participated in the SC Honors Chorus at Charleston Southern University. Also, a senior member of the program--Luke Griffin--was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York in February. The ensemble has also been working hard to prepare for their performance at tonight's choir invitational at Catawba Ridge High School.

Our theatre program has been hard at work preparing for the winter show: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. They will perform this musical December 12th through the 15th. They will also put on a pair of special performances for younger students throughout our district to share their talent and perhaps inspire future students to join the program. (More details in the graphic below)

And last but not least the FMHS Marching Band finished their season with a memorable competition out west, highlighted in greater detail in a section below.

We are so proud of all that our talented artists and performers do as well as the awesome way they represent the Yellow Jacket Universe.

Together We Swarm!

FMHS Marching Band Competes in Utah

Last weekend the Fort Mill High School Marching Band traveled to St. George, Utah to compete in a Bands of America Regional competition. They competed against 31 other bands from across 8 states in one of the biggest BOA events in the west. Our band finished 2nd in Class 3A, earning them a spot to compete in finals as one of the top 10 bands at the event. After a strong season-ending performance, they finished 4th overall. Our band also had the privilege of putting on an exhibition performance at the Utah State Marching Band Competition.

In a matter of just three days the band traveled over 4,500 miles (3,820 via air & 744 on the motor coaches), performed their show--“The Hollow Crown”--three times in twenty-four hours, drove through some of the most remote and striking scenery in all of the United States, spent an afternoon at the Grand Canyon National Park (with a quick stop at the Glen Canyon Dam), and even caught a glimpse of the massive Hoover Dam before returning home. This was an epic way for the band to close out their season, and they represented our school and community on the national stage in a truly incredible way.

Teacher Recognition Donations

Fort Mill High School will be collecting donations of $10 gift cards to Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks for teacher recognition prizes. Each month we honor 4 teachers as Teachers of the Month and like to provide them with a small token of our appreciation of the way they go the extra mile for our students. Please consider donating a $10 gift card to Chick-Fil-A or Starbucks to help us replenish our supply of awards for teachers. If you would like to donate, you can drop off cards during the month of November to the main office of Fort Mill High School or the R Wing.
