  • Rabbis in Jesus’ day taught by quoting the opinions of other rabbis. How does Jesus show His authority as the Son of God?

  • What was the reaction of the people to Jesus? How do demons respond to Jesus?

Listen and Sing: "Only Jesus"

Kid Talk

Read Mark 1:21-28.

Who tells you what to do? Your parents, grandparents, teachers, other adults . . . these people are authorities in your life. You listen to them because they help you do what is good and right. But sometimes we listen to things or people that tell us wrong things to do. How do we know who to follow? Jesus is the best authority. He always leads us to think and say and do things that are good and right.

  • Where can you go to find out what Jesus wants you to do?

  • Say a prayer, asking Jesus to be the authority in your life.

Read Deuteronomy 18:15-20 from your Bible, or

Talk about it

“The Prophet” was one of the designations used to refer to the Promised One, Jesus. He would speak God’s own Word and speak in God’s own name.

  • What do these two characteristics reveal about the authority of this Prophet and His Word?

  • What message was the Prophet to bring to God’s people?

Listen: "There Was Jesus"

There was jesus by zach Williams with lyrics

Kid Talk

Read Deuteronomy 18:15-20.

God was speaking to Moses in these verses. God told Moses that He would send a Prophet who would speak God's own Word and speak in God's name. That Prophet was Jesus! We still listen to Him today, through the Bible, God's Word.

  • Why should we listen to the words of Jesus?

Devotion on the Epistle

Devotion on 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Talk about it

Read Romans 14:21 and 1 Corinthians 8:13, noting what St. Paul says he is willing to give up.

  • What would you be willing to give up to avoid hurting a weak brother or sister’s conscience?

  • What are the responsibilities of the stronger Christian in regard to weaker Christians in light of these verses from 1 Corinthians 8?

Read and focus on 1 Corinthians 8:1-3.

It can be tempting to act like a "know-it-all," especially if you really do know a lot about things! But sometimes when we are busy telling people what we know, we forget to show them love. God tells us what is most important: to love others.

  • How will you show love to others this week?

Read Psalm 111 from your Bible, or

Talk about it

Psalm 111 and 112 are “twins” psalms, probably written by the same author and meant to be read together.

  • Read both psalms and note common themes and thoughts.

The “fear” that the psalmist speaks of in verse 10 is a loving reverence and awe of God.

  • Why is this verse a theme you see several other times in the Bible? (see Job 28:28; Proverbs 1:7, 9:10)

Listen to "Psalm 111: O Give the Lord"

Psalm 111: O Give the Lord

Kid Talk

Focus on Psalm 111. Focus on verse 10.

To "fear" God means to love, respect, and trust Him.

  • How does loving, respecting, and trusting God make us more wise?

  • Talk about how following God's commands helps us become wiser and live better lives.

Sing "Memory Verse Song: Psalm 111:10"

Son of God, Eternal Savior -- LSB 842

Son of God, eternal Savior,

Source of life and truth and grace,

Word made flesh, whose birth among us

Hallows all our human race,

You our Head, who, throned in glory,

For Your own will ever plead:

Fill us with Your love and pity,

Heal our wrongs, and help our need.

As You, Lord, have lived for others,

So may we for others live.

Freely have Your gifts been granted;

Freely may Your servants give.

Yours the gold and Yours the silver,

Yours the wealth of land and sea;

We but stewards of Your bounty

Held in solemn trust will be.

Come, O Christ, and reign among us,

King of love and Prince of Peace;

Hush the storm of strife and passion,

Bid its cruel discords cease.

By Your patient years of toiling,

By Your silent hours of pain,

Quench our fevered thirst of pleasure,

Stem our selfish greed of gain.

Son of God, eternal Savior,

Source of life and truth and grace,

Word made flesh, whose birth among us

Hallows all our human race:

By Your praying, by Your willing

That Your people should be one,

Grant, O grant our hope’s fruition:

Here on earth Your will be done.

PRAYERS

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Luther's Evening Prayer

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
