A Message from Mrs. Burkhardt
Parents,
As we head into the second month of the school year, I want to thank you for allowing the Southside Staff to be a part of your child’s life. We have appreciated parent support at our Back to School Bash and Parent Partnership Orientation Nights in August. Our first All Pro Dad morning was a huge success and eclipse viewing was a family event at Southside! In September, we will be hosting several fun and informative events that we look forward to sharing with you and your family.
We have begun our Fall Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing. All students, grades K-5, are assessed in Reading and Math and grades 2-5 are assessed in Language Usage. It is important that you and your student know why we assess using MAP three times a year and how we use the results to personalize learning for your student.
Fall MAP serves as a starting point for the school year. We are able to check in on a student’s current level of understanding in tested areas and make a plan for growth. We also compare the Fall MAP result to the prior Spring MAP result to see if students grew or regressed during the summer months. When we test in winter and spring, we are looking for how your child compares to the grade level expectation, but we are also determining your student’s rate of growth from their individual starting point. Both measures are important in seeing how a student is responding to the instruction that happens between the assessments. At Southside we use MAP data, along with other data points, to provide your child with learning experiences that will be focused on his/her “next steps” in learning.
Thank you for your continued participation as a Tiger Parent. Your role and influence is the most important in your child’s development. Thank you again for allowing us to partner with you.
Susie Burkhardt
