Principal's Message

October is coming to a fast close. The days are getting darker sooner as we approach daylight savings time. We received our new portable classroom this past Wednesday. Mrs. Rawls will soon move to portable number 7 and Mrs. Carlson's third grade class will move from our music stage to room 27, the room Mrs. Rawls is vacating. I am blessed to work with a group of people who see the big picture and focus on what's best for our students and never what is easiest for staff. I can't stress this enough. What a team!! Take care.

Dr. Rumbaugh's Family Message 10-22-21

Hello Families,

I wanted to share an experience I had at Stanwood Middle School this week. I watched a pair of students present a mini-lesson to their science class on “Why is Light So Important?” The two students made connections between light and darkness, light and plant life, light and overall health. I was so impressed! As I listened, I began to make connections between light and learning. As we work together to improve our teaching practices, provide engaging learning experiences and give meaningful feedback to students and families, we bring the excitement of learning and growth into the lives of our students. This excitement is often seen as a “light” going off in the mind of a student. As concepts are grasped and new learning takes root, students grow and flourish. I am grateful for the time I spent at SMS learning about light and its importance!

Virtual Coffee with the Board

The School Board will be holding Virtual Coffee with the Board events on November 8 and 9, 2021, with morning, mid-day and evening sessions available. This is an opportunity for families and the community to interact with and meet your School Board of Directors, receive district updates, and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Employment opportunities with SCSD

SCSD is hiring! We love to have family members as SCSD employees. Please visit our Employment Opportunities page and apply online. We have immediate openings for bus drivers, custodians, electricians, food service workers and paraeducators.

Fall conferences reminder

A reminder to families that October 27, 28 and 29 are early release days for parent-teacher conferences. The schedule for those days will be 7:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. for secondary schools and 9:00 a.m. to noon for elementary schools. Please note that the 27th is a Wednesday, but is not a late start day. Please contact your student’s school if you have questions about scheduling conferences. You will have the option to attend in person or virtually via Google Meets.

Strategic Plan

Help plan our future in the SCSD as we begin the work to create our five-year strategic plan. We will be scheduling a series of virtual community forums to share your ideas for our district. Look for more detailed information soon.

Replacement Capital Projects and Technology Levy

On the February 2022 ballot, we will be running a 4-year Replacement Capital Projects and Technology Levy that would replace an expiring 4-year capital levy. This levy proposal would allow the district to maintain technology systems and continue to make major improvements to existing facilities.

The estimated tax rate per $1,000 of assessed property value for this measure is 27 cents for each year of the levy. There is no increase in the tax rate in this levy from the previous levy. When assessed property values change, the local school tax rate is adjusted to ensure that the district collects only the levy dollar amount approved by voters. If approved by voters, this measure would expire in 2026.

The Great Shakeout Completed!

On Thursday, October 21st, our district participated in the, "Great Shakeout." This was an earthquake drill using our districts automated messaging for the first time. I spoke with some of our teachers and they stated the students did great! The drill did not include a full-school evacuation. If an earthquake were to occur, evacuating the building would be determined by the amount of damage, if fire is present, or if there is a gas or water leak. For more information regarding the, "The Great Shakeout," click on the link below. Thank you.
