A Note from Dr. Peterson
I wanted to include a few important notes to serve as a reminder for our families:
- Lately, it has been reported to me that families are parking on the sidewalk on the Atlanta side of our building. Please DO NOT park on the sidewalk as this is a place for our students and families to walk safely to their destination(s).
- When you visit our building, please be prepared to have your ID scanned and a visitor tag given to you in order to access our building. For additional information on this process, please visit this link: https://www.webster.k12.mo.us/Page/8367
- Our lost and found has moved to the gym vestibule. There are already a lot of jackets and items in this area! We encourage you to please put your child's name on water bottles and jackets so that we can return the item to the appropriate person when/if lost.
Please reach out should you have additional questions!
Thanks,
Hannah Peterson, Ed.D.

A Note from Mrs. Wallace… Avery’s School Counselor
Habit #1- Be Proactive
So far our Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes have had a visit from Mrs. Wallace in order to begin the year Proactively J All of our students have had reminders about getting in the green zone and being proactive (in charge of yourself).
In Kindergarten - We introduced the Howard B. Wigglebottom series of stories with “Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen”. Howard has to learn to be Proactive the hard way. We can learn from him and not make the same mistakes.
In First- We met Grinner and Blackbelt. Grinner is a flying squirrel but he does not have confidence when it comes to flying, school, and other things his friends do. Blackbelt is a wise raccoon that is a wonderful mentor for Grinner and he helps him learn 4 steps to always being a winner.
In Second- Second graders learned how to Be Proactive and feel good about themselves. We read the Habit #1 story, Just the Way I Am. In this story Pokey the porcupine is sad when other students make fun of his quills. He learns that he is in charge of himself and he can focus on the positive aspects of being a porcupine. We also discussed the four things that are happening is you are faced with a situation where you might be being bullied.

It's time for the Avery PTO Fundraising Buy-Out!
You don't want to sell cookie dough and wrapping paper to your neighbors, right? In lieu of asking your kids to hit up your friends and family, the PTO membership has elected to make fundraising simple by asking parents to contribute directly to the PTO. EVERY dollar collected through the buy-out gets distributed to classroom teachers at Avery. Teachers then use this money to cover supplies as needs arise throughout the year.
How to donate:
● Return this form and your cash or check payable to “Avery PTO” in the PTO Mailbox located in the front hall. https://mo02202299.schoolwires.net//cms/lib/MO02202299/Centricity/Domain/103/PTO%20BuyOut%20form%202022-2023.pdf
● Donate online through PayPal (pto.averyelementary@gmail.com) or Venmo (@pto-avery). Please note, when making an online donation, a processing fee will apply. Please consider increasing your donation to cover the fee so that your full donation will go to the teachers.
● Please submit all donations by October 14, 2022.
Have questions? Contact PTO President, Ingrid Deetz, at IngridDeetz@gmail.com or 312-399-1343.

Expected Behaviors
Parents and Guardians-
As we head into the school year, there will be opportunities for the Avery community to come together for after school events on the Avery campus. This note is to serve as a reminder and conversation prompts to have with your children prior to events outside the normal school day:
Please listen to the parent volunteers who are supporting the event.
Please limit access to the building to use of restrooms or areas where activities are present.
The Avery Way is something students learn and recite EVERY morning. These would be good reminders for your child as well. Below you can find our Avery Way:
A-Always Safe
V-Very Responsible
E-Engaged in Learning
R-Respectful to self others and property
Y-You Matter!
Thank you for supporting Avery and the PTO by reinforcing these strategies with your child(ren).

Birthday Treats
Beginning this school year, we will begin celebrating student birthdays differently than in the past. We will no longer be accepting outside birthday treats for your child's birthday. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but primarily due to the dietary restrictions and safety of our students.
We will continue to celebrate your child on their birthday! Some ways we do this as a whole school are including names on our T.V. monitors around the building, announcing birthdays on the morning announcements, and beginning this year having students visit the office for their very own birthday pencil.
Individual classrooms also celebrate birthdays! Teachers will be reaching out to families on the unique ways they plan to ensure your children feel special on their big day!
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you,
Hannah Peterson, Ed.D.
