Fall 2020, A Season to Remember!

From a very grateful Athletic Director....

As the 2020 fall season is now over and the Holiday season is upon us, I cannot think of a better word to encompass my feelings. Grateful. I am very grateful for this town and this high school. For the student-athletes, coaches and parents who make this department second to none.

When looking back to the first day of summer conditioning on July 3rd, I must admit I was just as skeptical as many were, not knowing if we would even have a season. Fast forward to the night of November 18th, as our boys soccer team won the North Division Championship and the fall season was over! WOW! All of the constant (sometimes nagging) reminders about staying apart, or "Hey, put your mask on!" or "Stay away from her." It all paid off. We were one of a very few number of schools, who were able to make it through an entire high school season without any real disruptions. With over 500 student-athletes participating in fall sports, this was no small feat. Again, a true testament to our student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainer, athletic department staff and all of our parents!

Who would have ever imagined that a season that was not suppose to begin, would have such an amazing ending! Read on....

In addition, Newtown High School was named a Unified Champion School, see the banner unveiling below!

The Look of NHS Football May Have Changed - But the Heart of the Team Stayed Strong!

Our Newtown Nighthawk Football Team was not able to participate in the typical 11v11 format, due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. However, the team did participate in a 7v7 touch football format. Yes, we know this was not traditional football, but our linemen also took part in various strength and conditioning competitions as well. We are staying positive, and hoping that we will have an opportunity in the early spring to play a modified 11v11 football schedule. The Hawks were led by Coach Bob Pattison, and we cannot say enough about his leadership, flexibility and positivity during these unprecedented times. The Nighthawks completed their 7 on 7 Season unbeaten at 6-0!

A PERFECT FINISH FOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL!

Another stellar finish for NHS Athletics, this time it's with Coach Tom Czaplinski!
The Girls Volleyball Team went undefeated in the SWC North Division, by eliminating every team they faced! Playing on one of the unluckiest days on the calendar, the Nighthawks didn't need luck to clinch the SWC Championship Game! They ended up with a Perfect 15-0 Season!
It doesn't get better than this!

NHS GIRLS SOCCER HAS A GREAT SEASON!

Coach Kenney and the NHS Girls Soccer Team had a great season. Coming in 2nd Place during a pandemic is a huge accomplishment! The girls made a run for the SWC Crown defeating Pomperaug in the SWC North semifinals but lost to New Milford 2-0. The girls continued their positive work off the field volunteering at the Newtown Community Center, the NHS Athletic Department gift card drive, and making over 300 holiday cards for a group of local senior citizens.

NHS NIGHTHAWKS SWIM & DIVE TEAM SPLASHES INTO 2ND PLACE!

Swimming & Diving virtually during the entire season, the Nighthawks 2020 Girls Swim & Dive Team had an outstanding one . Not only did they come in 2nd Place behind Weston, but they broke a total of 8 Pool Records. A season that could have ended at any moment, and one full of challenges, proved to be no match for the girls dedication to the sport they love! Such an amazing job by our team and Coaches Osborne and Irving!

From coach Osborne: "Swimming and Diving had an amazing, yet different season. The swimmers dealt with every new challenge head on and ended the season by setting 8 team and or pool records while finishing 2nd place at SWCs. Awesome job ladies!"

Nighthawks Field Hockey Team Has a Spectacular Season!

Big picture
You would think that losing 10 Senior starters from the previous year, combined with 3 brand new coaches and a global pandemic would make it impossible for a first time Coach! Not so for Ellen Goyda! The NHS Field Hockey Team went 11-1 regular season, and had a heart-breaker of a loss to New Milford in the finals. Very Impressive!

From head coach Ellen Goyda: "Although the season didn’t end the way we would have liked, I’m extremely proud of all our girls this year! We remained healthy and navigated our way through the Covid season unscathed. Most importantly, we realize how extremely lucky we were and more so, appreciative that we got to create memories for our seniors. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to coach them and can’t wait for next season!"

BOYS XC TEAM are Strait Outta Newtown!

Coaches Carl & Sara Strait are Newtown teachers and runners themselves, so it's no surprise that this year Sara agreed to be our assistant coach. Here is a quote from Coach Carl Strait: "Everyday we practiced or competed, it was a win. We were competing not only against ourselves, our teammates and our competitors, but we competed against Covid. I'm happy to say we we were successful this year. Despite all the hurdles, set in place, our captains guided, our athletes competed, and our team flourished."

NIGHTHAWKS GIRLS XC TEAM!

With the coronavirus altered season, Coach Caron hopes of winning a repeat SWC Championship, had to be scaled down. Their goals were to have fun, improve as a team, and make it through the season healthy, which is exactly what they did!

Community Service

This Holiday Season, the Newtown Nighthawks took part in a gift card drive campaign to assist local families in need. Members of various sports teams held a collection drive every Monday evening and collected gift cards to local grocery stores. With only 4 collection days, we collected $2,250 which will go directly to Newtown Social Services, and will pay for meals for Newtown families! Thank you so very much to our amazing community who donated gift cards, and to our many volunteers manning the tables.

Newtown Middle School Athletics

Newtown Middle School's fall athletics hit the ground running this year with over 80 student-athletes participating in cross country and unified soccer. Coaches Ken Kantor, Andrew Tammero, and Anna Malkin led the Lions in fun team building and competitive challenges. During this tough time, the athletes enjoyed being outside with friends and competition. This winter we are excited to have 7th and 8th-grade basketball along with unified basketball.
