Hey freshies! My name is Brock Keyser. As a former freshman, I will tell you how to be successful in English 9. You will enjoy the class if you listen to Mrs. Allen and complete your assignments. Once you have completed English 9, you will look back and see how much you learned over the course of the school year. Mrs. Allen is a great teacher and mentor. I'm sure you will agree with me once you participate in her class!
This year, you will read multiple short stories and a few great novels. If you have watched the movie Divergent, you will already be knowledgeable about the book. It follows the same story line as the movie, with very few details left out. It is a great read, but be sure to keep up. You read a chapter for homework every night! Another novel you will read is Monster. The book is about a young teenager named Steve Harmon who is accused of being the lookout in a robbery gone deadly. At the end of the book, you will decide whether he is innocent or guilty. Romeo and Juliet is one of the best stories you will read all year. You will imagine the story as a play. At the end of the reading, you will watch the newest version of the story which is a movie. In April, you will be partnered up with a few people to read the same book. Me and my group read Okay For Now, which I highly recommend. The book is about a young man, Doug Swieteck, who is abused and bullied by his teachers and his father. He overcomes these hardships and his life is turned around. You will read some great books this year!
If you read when you are supposed to, Mrs. Allen likes you. If you read for fun, she will love you! You pick out books to read that are interesting to you. If you don't like your book, it's your fault! Pick a book that you know you will enjoy. Don't guess. Reading is the easiest part of English 9. It will make you a better reader and it will also entertain you. Reading is awesome!
I really enjoyed reading the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers. It is written like a movie script, which makes it easy and interesting to read. The book is about a young teenager, Steve Harmon, on trial for taking part in a crime. At the end of the book, you get to decide whether he is innocent or guilty. I struggled reading the book Divergent. While it is a great book, it can be hard to keep up with the work. There are many assignments and projects to complete, so it is easy to fall behind.
From the first day to the last, be organized. It makes the class a lot easier. Read a lot, too. It can only help you. Never daze off in class. If you do, you will get lost. Most importantly, come to class ready to learn.
