AIS West - October 2020
Dear students and parents,
We hope this newsletter finds you well. We are almost done with our first full week with Cohort B and things are falling into place with our new normal. Huge thanks to our students, parents and teachers for their patience, flexibility and confidence in us during this time.
Please carefully read the Important Dates listed below. You will notice that both campuses have added an Independent Online Learning Day to each month. The first day is on October 11. This will give students an opportunity to catch up on their studies from home. They will also be able to join Zoom office hours throughout the day to get individual support from teachers.
Due to several holidays and the online learning day, many weeks this semester will include only 4 days of in person instruction. Because of this shift we will now allow up to 3 summative assessments on a given day. We will give at least one week notice for all summative assessments.

Wearing Masks on Campus - A Message from Dr. Aisha Gamal Eldin
From a medical perspective, I cannot press on how important it is to continually remind our students what proper mask hygiene is while in school.
We ask that you work with your students to remind them of the following:
1. A damp or wet mask is not effective and can pose a health threat as it decreases proper oxygenation.
2. Extra masks should be brought to school each school day.
3. We should never touch the front of our masks, as this portion is contaminated. We should hold our masks by the ties or loops.
4. A mask should be worn while walking in the hallways as well as in our classrooms.
5. Masks should fit well to provide ample protection and the nose and mouth should both be covered at all times.
Thank you for your continued support in helping keep our AIS West community safe.

Student of the Month
One teacher wrote: Ismail shows many sides of the caring attribute. He cares about his learning path and he demonstrated this during online learning. He was on time, attentive, and participated during in class zoom discussions. When in person learning began he was just as attentive and caring about his schoolwork. However, I saw another side of Ismail's caring attitude. When a new student had trouble setting up his WiFi Ismail graciously took him to IT and helped him navigate his way. He was very gracious and missed out on nutrition to help another student; and seemed quite happy to have helped.
Teacher of the Month
One teacher wrote: Hannah is the most caring teacher at AIS West. She always goes above and beyond to make sure the students, teachers, and local staff are cared for properly at the school. Hannah is quick to assist new teachers in adjusting to the culture in Egypt. She is also the first to give back to our local staff in times of need. Hannah truly embodies the Caring IB Learner Profile Attribute.
