Wednesday, November 2
- Forum on "Politics in Education" focused on the implications of the 2016 election for education policy. Anne Belk Hall 118 (lower level) at 6:00pm
Speakers will include: Dr. Rennie Brantz, the mayor of Boone and ASU History professor; Dr. Jay Fenwick, member of the Watauga County Board of Education and ASU Computer Science professor; Dr. Cary Fraser, ASU Government and Justice Studies professor and former president of the University of Belize; Jalyn Howard, president of ASU’s Student Government Association; and Ayako Nakano, chief of staff of ASU’s Student Government Association. Presentations will be followed by an open discussion.
*The event is sponsored by Faculty Forward Network, a 501(c)3 organization consisting of faculty, students, parents, and allies who believe that higher education needs to once again serve all students, faculty, non-faculty higher education staff, and the surrounding communities. - APPlause Ushering-North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble--we need 8-10 volunteers for a packed house at Schaefer from 9:00-10:00am. You receive service hours and an opportunity to watch the show for free!

I wanted to remind you about the courses in the Media Studies minor that will be offered in the Spring 2017. These are all creative, hands-on courses that allow you to leverage sophisticated media production tools to help you stand out as a creative professional in any field. Register early and tell your friends! (If you’re graduating and wanting to do graduate work in media, consider the Masters in Educational Media and Instructional Technology, particularly the New Media Literacies and Global Perspectives" track. Media Studies Courses in Spring 2017
CRN 10691 CI 4740 Photography and Digital Imaging (TR 9:30-10:45)
Instructor: Jamille Wallick
Learn to make creative images with a digital single-lens reflex camera (which we have for check out!). Develop Photoshop and web design skills in a supportive, hands-on atmosphere.
CRN 10692 CI 4810 Introduction to Sight and Sound (TR 12:30-1:45)
Instructor: Jeff Goodman
Explore the wonders of light, vision, sound, hearing, and the technologies we use to make art from the raw materials of physics and perception. Develop skills in digital manipulation, web design, basic video and audio production, and stop-action animation. (Note: This is a required course for the media studies minor, and it is generally both Spring and Fall.)
CRN 11809 CI 4770 Intermediate Photography and Digital Imaging (TR 2:00-3:15)
Instructor: Jeff Goodman
Push your photography to the next level as you explore a wide variety of new creative approaches to making images, including animated photos, making photos without lenses, 3D photography, photography as poetry, and more.
CRN 12995 CI 4825 Non-fiction Film and Video (TR 11:00-12:15)
Instructor: Jamille Wallick
Watch, analyze and discuss the ways award-winning documentary videos engage the viewer with a wide variety of interesting people, places and ideas. Work in small groups to shoot and edit a documentary of your own.
CRN 12686 CI 4830 Media Literacy (MW 12:30-1:45)
Instructor: Theresa Redmond
Explore and enact what it means to be literate in the digital age by deconstructing and evaluating media messages including movies, television, music, photojournalism, Facebook, Instagram, and more. Critique and create media in a constructivist classroom climate. (Note: This is a required course for the media studies minor, and it is generally both Spring and Fall.)
CRN 10693 CI 4840 Beginning Video Production (W 5-7:30)
Instructor: John Henson
Learn to make creative video projects using DSLR kits (which we have for check out). Develop video production and editing skills in a collaborative and hands-on environment.

World Language Educators in North Carolina, have you ever used Snapchat in your language classroom? Do you have great ideas for implementing the application in your teaching?
If this sounds like you, would you consider participating in a survey on Snapchat usage and implementation in NC World Language classrooms? Research will be conducted virtually to obtain data that contributes to the discussion of Snapchat and other facets of social media in the classroom. The survey is anonymous and conducted through Google Forms. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes, including three sections (background, usage, and implementation). Granted this research is anonymous, you will not be contacted again following your participation in this research.
