Pennwood Holds Annual Unity Walk
Pennwood Middle School held its annual Unity Walk around the middle school campus today. As part of the event, students sign the school's Resolution of Respect" in which they agree to "do our best to combat prejudice and to stop those who violate the civil rights of others. We will seek to understand those who are different. We believe that one person can make a difference and that no person should stand by when it comes to opposing hate. We will speak out against prejudice ad discrimination. We will reach out to those who are victims of hate. We know that we must promote harmony, equality, and respect with zero indifference. By signing this pledge and participating in the Unity Walk, we commit ourselves to believing 'We aRe Pennwood. We aRe United' and creating a community that is 'No Place for Hate.'"
After the walk, students and staff gathered for fun, games, prizes, and dancing!

PHS Student Participates in White House Conference
Pennsbury High School junior Samarth Mannikeri recently participated in the 2022 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. He attended the conference as a student ambassador for GENYOUth's Youth Council, a non-profit that "elevates student voices and gives them the means to lead and solve real-world problems."
Samarth and his fellow Youth Council members were involved in discussions with government leaders and leaders from the public and private sectors. The goal? To end hunger and increase healthy eating and physical activity by 2030 so that fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.
Samarth first connected to the issues when he was a student at Fallsington Elementary School through his involvement with Fuel Up to Play 60, a national health and wellness program that receives funds by GENYOUth. He is passionate about educating others on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity and the perspective the youth voice can bring to the table to help tackle the problem.
"If we don't nurture the youth voice, it will be tarnished in the future," said Samarth.
The event featured keynote speeches by President Biden and world-renowned Chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, a non-profit devoted to providing meals in the wake of natural disasters. Second gentleman of the United States, Doug Emhoff, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, and other department chairs were also in attendance.
"Seeing government leaders take action on issues such as this is important. It was a phenomenal event, very inspiring," said Samarth.
Samarth is involved in a variety of different activities at Pennsbury High School. He is a member of the Speech & Debate team and the Pennsbury Science Discovery Club. He also sits on Pennsbury's
Principal/Superintendent/Student Advisory Committee (PESAC) and the Pennsbury-Morrisville Merger Feasibility Committee and is a member of the Teen Takes student writing panel for the Bucks County Courier Times. Samarth is interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
Instant Decision Days at Pennsbury High School
October 26-28 were Instant Decision Days at Pennsbury High School. Instant Decision Days allow high school seniors the opportunity to immediately learn whether they receive admission to a particular college or university. Students spent roughly 15-20 minutes interviewing with an admissions officer and reviewing their high school transcript. At the end of the interview, the students were informed if the institution was extending an offer of admission.
"We had 69 total acceptances over the three days with some of our students receiving scholarship money ranging from $6000 per year to full tuition scholarships! Our students did a wonderful job of representing PHS throughout the event," said Brooke Stoudt, Postsecondary Counselor at Pennsbury High School.
Participating schools included Arcadia University, Commonweath University, East Stroudsburg University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Holy Family University, Kutztown University, La Salle University, Millersville University, Rider University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Widener University.
Eleanor Roosevelt Celebrates First Responders Day
Friday, October 28, is First Responders Day, and 4th graders at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School had the opportunity to meet some of our community's heroes! Members of the Falls Township Police Department, the Falls Township Fire Marshal's office, the Falls Township Fire Company (Station 30,) the Bensalem Rescue Squad, and the Yardley-Makefield Fire Squad stopped by the school today to talk to the students about the role they play in keeping our community safe. The students spent a lot of time asking questions about the various aspects of the first responders' jobs and saw the inside of the police SUV. They also witnessed how quickly first responders had to act after the Falls Township Fire Company received a fire call.
Before the visit was over, students presented the first responders with water bottles with special labels they made to show their gratitude for all they do for the community. An estimated 4.6 million people serve as career and volunteer firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics in the United States.
Oxford Valley Hosts First Responders Recognition Day
On October 21, Oxford Valley Elementary School paid tribute to first responders in the community.
Students and staff had the opportunity to thank community firefighters, police officers, EMTs, school nurse Jill Demi and acting chief of Pennsbury security Steve Louden for helping to keep them safe so they can focus on learning. Each first responder received a snack basket generously donated by Oxford Valley families and additional snack baskets for their colleagues. Before the assembly concluded, students performed a special song as a thank you to the first responders under the direction of vocal music teacher Victoria Zajac.
Following the recognition event, students and staff headed outside to learn more about the first responders' role in the community. They explored a firetruck, ambulance, and the Falls Township Fire Marshal's office Smoke Trailer. The Smoke Trailer has a smoke-like, non-hazardous material that is pushed through the trailer to simulate smoke to teach children how to navigate quickly through a residential-like area and exit through a window.
Thank you to the Falls Township Police Department, the Falls Township Fire Marshal, the Fairless Hills Fire Department - Station 31, the Levittown-Fairless Hills Rescue Squad, and the Bucks County Sheriff's Office to their commitment to safety in our community!
Thursday Night Live at PHS
Last night, Pennsbury High School's Thespian Troupe 830 performed "Thursday Night Live," an improv show in the style of the famous SNL. This production was written, performed, and produced by students. Senior Cassi Daley directed, along with the production team of Addison Blumberg, Meghan Crohe, and Ellie Umstead. Writers include Gianna Mathas, Ava Mascio, Andrew Meschke, Gianna Miller, and Annamarie Radzinski. To close out the show, Delusion, a local band comprised of Pennsbury students, rocked the house with a music performance.
Thursday Night Live was started 7 years ago as a fundraiser, and their tradition of giving back to the local community continues. This year, the troupe asked attendees to bring canned goods to donate to the high school's food pantry. The PHS food pantry is always accepting donations, especially foods that students can heat up such as canned ravioli, soups, mac and cheese cups, oatmeal, individual snack bags, and fruit cups.
Congratulations to the drama troupe on a successful event!
Fallsington Students Meet a Bearded Dragon
Students in Mrs. Mauck's class at Fallsington Elementary School had an interesting visitor today. Mrs. Pellegrino, one of the school's custodians, brought her bearded dragon Arla to school. The students asked many questions about Arla, like what she likes to eat and her expected lifespan. They also learned that bearded dragons brumate during the winter. Brumation is a term used for the sleep-like state that some cold-blooded animals, such as bearded dragons, adopt during winter. Brumation can last anywhere from a few weeks to the entire winter!
