Counselor's Corner
During the month of December, we have been talking about a couple of topics – compassion and internet safety. We have been using a resource called NetSmartz. I encourage you to look it up and use the parent resources provided. With Christmas break approaching, the use of internet/screen time becomes a topic that needs to be addressed. Please be mindful of what your children are watching. Make sure to follow age appropriate guidelines when allowing them to watch videos and play games, and please set time limits. I have attached a general guide for screen time. In addition to age appropriate materials and time limits, be aware if your child is playing on-line games with strangers. You never know who is on the other end of the computer unless you have met them face to face. We have talked in class about safe adults, about not giving out information on-line, and having a limited amount of time in front of an electronic device. Kids need boundaries, so please help them set and follow them!
NetSmartz provides age-appropriate videos, activities, and other resources to help teach children, parents, and educators how to be safer online. The goal is helping children to become more aware of potential online risks and empowering them to help prevent victimization by making safer choices on - and offline.
Title Talk
Reading
Students on Reading Success Plans will bring home activities to work on with their family. These activities will support their reading goals and growth. Let me know if you have any questions over these activities.
I have been working on fun packets to help parents work with their children at home. Please let me know if you would like any games or materials. These would be great activities for your child to do over the break. But, more importantly, over break find books to read together, engage in conversations and just enjoy each other. Here's a list of activities to do with your child that require little preparation or money:
- Sled together
- Dance party
- Make a craft
- Puzzles
- Board games
- Legos
- Shadow puppets
- Bake together
- Blanket fort
- Charades (see the list below)
Math
- K is working on counting items in a group and joining or adding two groups together. They are still mastering the skill of number recognition for numbers 1-100.
- 1st is working on addition and subtraction math facts through 20 and getting ready to work with addition and subtraction equations. Working with math fact flash cards will be very valuable. They are also working on recognizing 52 numbers between 1-100 in one minute or less.
- 2nd is working on fluently subtracting numbers within 100 and continuing to work on math facts.
- 3rd is becoming fluent multiplying and dividing within 100, learning to find the area of a shape, and continuing to work on math facts.
- 4th is learning long division using a one digit number and continuing to work on math facts.
😄 Why was the math book sad during winter break? 😄
It had too many problems!
