Notes from the Principal's Office
Oh the energy and excitement! Do you remember what the first day of a new job feels like? Teachers get to feel that way on the first day of school in a new school year each August. For some of us the night before we have planned out the perfect out fit and find ourselves tossing and turning with both excitement and anticipation of what the new school year will bring. This August Newbury Elementary found ourselves in a unique position of having all of our staff return for the 23-24 school year and hiring on several new staff you join our team. Having all of our staff return creates stability, and continued continuity in programming. We are all very excited about what the new year holds for our school family.
Our boiler project is in full swing. The old boilers have been removed and two new wood pellet boilers have been put into position. The chimney has been repaired and now we are just waiting on the silo to be assembled and put into place. The majority of this project was grant funded by both state and federal grants. In addition, to the boilers we have also installed additional security cameras. Allowing us to monitor all entrances to the building in emergency situations. We are feeling very good about all of the system upgrades that have been made in order to make our learning environment safer and more efficient.
If the laughter, smiles and screams of excitement are any indication, it looks like we are off to a great start to the 2023-2024 school year!
Wishing You Well,
~Loretta

Positivity Project Focus September 4th-8th: Curiosity
Dear Families,
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Curiosity. Curiosity means you like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything.
Curiosity is a crucial component of one’s character. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plotlines of movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. All individuals experience curiosity but differ in their willingness to experience it -- behaviorally, intellectually, and emotionally.
Individuals with the character strength of curiosity are more likely to ask questions and try new things. Curiosity, then, is a form of courage. Asking questions exposes the fact that we don’t know and trying a new activity means we might fail. But, it’s only through asking questions and exploring new opportunities that we learn and grow.
To practice and encourage the character strength of curiosity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.
Have a wonderful week!

Shout out to FoNES (Friends of Newbury Elementary School) for representing NES in the annual West Newbury Summer Festival Parade!
