Best Practices for Professional Email
*Article published on Inside Higher Ed
"No matter what career path you choose, communication is a skill you will need to use in every job role. The way you communicate with other people reflects your professionalism -- often a vague and nebulous term, but one that generally refers to the conduct and qualities an individual exhibits at work.
The average American worker receives 122 emails per day. Email is fast, sometimes too fast, and continuous. It never stops, and it seems we rarely take time to think about the why and how of this communication mode. Email also seems to be one of the most common stumbling blocks that graduate students and postdocs come across in their professional communication.
Here are some basic tips to help you with clear, confident, professional electronic communication in your current working situation, as well as when you move to a new workplace." Read more.

Career Awards at the Scientific Interface | Burroughs Wellcome Fund | Apply by September 5
BWF's Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) provide $500,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. These awards are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents.
These grants are intended to foster the early career development of researchers who have transitioned or are transitioning from undergraduate and/or graduate work in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or engineering into postdoctoral work in the biological sciences, and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research.
Scientific advances such as genomics, quantitative structural biology, imaging techniques, and modeling of complex systems have created opportunities for exciting research careers at the interface between the physical/computational sciences and the biological sciences. Tackling key problems in biology will require scientists trained in areas such as chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering.
For more information and to apply visit the Borroughs Wellcome Fund website.

Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative: 2018 Bridge to Independence Award | Letter of Intent, Deadline: August 6
*On behalf of Kristine Haskett, Director, Rutgers Foundation Relations:
The Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) is pleased to announce the 2018 Bridge to Independence Award request for applications (RFA).
Grants awarded through this program are intended to invest in the next generation of top autism investigators by identifying talented early-career scientists interested in autism research and facilitating their transition to independent research careers.
One of the most salient milestones in a scientific career is the transition from formal mentorship to an independent position. Unfortunately, this transition has become increasingly tenuous in recent years, in part because of the decreasing number of tenure-track faculty positions, which has been compounded by the increasing number of Ph.D. graduates and postgraduate traineeships. SFARI created the Bridge to Independence Award program to address this issue and to encourage continued excellence in the autism research field.
This RFA is aimed at senior postdoctoral fellows who intend to seek tenure-track faculty positions during the 2018–2019 academic year. We welcome applications that span the breadth of science that SFARI normally supports, including genetics, molecular mechanisms, circuits and systems, and clinical science. While we encourage applications from postdoctoral fellows who are working on autism-related projects, we would like to stress that this award is also open to researchers who are not currently working on autism but who are interested in starting research projects in this area and who have expertise that could be brought to bear on this complex disorder.
The program features a unique timeline in which the applicant submits their proposal as a postdoctoral fellow and receives their Bridge to Independence Award funding only once they assume a tenure-track professorship. Grantees receive a commitment of $495,000 over three years, awarded through their faculty-appointment institution.
The deadline for Letters of Intent is August 6, 2018. Detailed information and application instructions are available here.
