News From the Nest
Evansdale Weekly Newsletter - August 31st Edition
From the Principal's Desk...
Our first month of school has gotten off to a great start! The students and staff have been working hard to learn classroom routines and immediately started working on learning objectives. This year, we will focus on three areas: Improving our lexile (reading) levels, problem solving in math, and inquiry circles in STEM. We want the students to learn how to critically think and have the ability to research or inquire about grade level standards and their own interests. Our instruction will be based on the Framework for 21st centurylearning to put 21st century skills at the center of learning. I have included links below to give you more information. Students have been completing MAP assessments over the past couple of weeks. These assessments will give us a better picture of each child's ability level so we can plan for differentiated instruction. I have included some pictures of some students and teachers at work.

A Note From Mr. Clayton
Hello Parents,
The 17-18 school year is off to a rip roaring start! It's been exciting seeing familiar faces and getting to know the families that are new to the EES community. I wanted to pass along a couple of pieces of important information.
1) We will be holding a couple of meetings to discuss the gifted identification process for Dekalb County and how the gifted program works in our building. There will be two sessions on Thursday, September 21st. One will take place at 8:30 am and one will take place at 6 pm. Both sessions will take place in the media center.
2) If your child took the Torrance test for creativity during the second semester of the 2016-2017 school year, I have requested individual student reports. I hope to receive these soon and I will send them home when I receive them.
3) We are a long way out from Georgia Milestones for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, but I want to pass along the dates that have been scheduled for testing this school year. Milestones testing will be taking place from April 10th-April 25th, 2018. I will of course pass along more detailed information as we get closer, but I did want to go ahead and provide those dates for you.
I'm looking forward to the remainder of the school year and I'm proud to be part of the EES community!
Thanks,
Robert Clayton

Lakeside Cluster Summit
The first Lakeside Cluster Summit meeting of this school year is taking place Thursday, Sept 14th at 6:30pm at Henderson Middle School.
More detailed information and an Agenda will follow next week.
The Lakeside Cluster Summit was formed in January 2016 to encourage collaboration of all the schools within the Lakeside Cluster. These meetings are a way School Leaders (Principals, PTA Presidents, School Council Chairs), and District Leaders (Regional Superintendent, and Board of Education Members), within the Lakeside Cluster, can come together to share information and help solve problems affecting us all.
It is important that each school in the Lakeside Cluster sends at least one representative to these meetings. By attending these meetings, your school's voice can be heard, and you can stay informed about important news and events in our cluster.
Last year, the LCS (Lakeside Cluster Summit) focused on SPLOST/Facility Repairs, Diversity/Tolerance, and the Lakeside HS addition.
This year we will be continuing these agenda items and also focus our attention on improving communication and collaboration between all the Lakeside Cluster feeder schools.
Please note that going forward, email communication from the LCS will only be sent to Principals, Communication Chairs, and the designated Point of Contact for each school in the Lakeside Cluster. These individuals will be responsible for sharing information with your school's teachers, staff, and parents.
Please mark your calendars for Sept 14th. We hope to see you at Henderson MS.
Thank you,
LCS Co-Chairs: Debbie Martin-Gerstle and Sonya Tinsley-Hook
