THS College & Career Center
Second Edition Newsletter
A letter from the College & Career Center
Dear THS students and families,
On behalf of myself, Ms. Stacy, and the college & career team, we would like to say congratulations to our seniors for working so hard on their college applications! While November felt like crunch time for most students who were putting the final touches on their college submissions, we are almost ready to take a deep breath and look forward to the joys of December and the new year. We hope many of you will be able to relax and decompress over your holiday break this month.
In the new year, the CCC will be shifting our focus to making sure our seniors get those financial aid applications in. We also want to get the word out to ALL grades about tips on how to search and apply for scholarships. Check out this edition's featured article for important financial aid and scholarship information and tips. It's never too early to prepare for your dreams! We will be encouraging all of our students to begin their journey of finding money for college.
And lastly, In spirit of the season of giving, this newsletter will also highlight specific opportunities to give back to our communities. Volunteering is a great way to create experiences you can share with colleges, to add to your resume, help you land your very first job, and to increase your own health and happiness by helping others. In light of our current social circumstances, there are many motivations to get involved. Whatever the reason you have for lending a helping hand, is a great one :-) Happy Holidays!
Warmly,
Danielle DuPee

Featured Article: Financial Aid and Scholarships
Now that college applications are nearing deadlines, you should shift your focus to submitting your financial aid application and applying to scholarships. Every student who is applying to college should be submitting a financial aid application, regardless of what college you're applying to and regardless of your income amount.
Note: Scholarships often need you to submit your financial aid application before applying to the scholarship.
There are two options for financial aid applications:
1. You are eligible to complete the FAFSA if you are a:
• U.S Citizen
• Permanent Resident
• Eligible non-citizen
• T Visa holder
2. You are eligible to complete the California Dream Act if you are:
• Undocumented
• Have a valid or expired DACA
• U Visa holders
• Have Temporary Protected Status (TPS) 2
• Meet the non-resident exemption requirements under AB 540
Deadline is March 2 2021, but it is suggested for you to submit it as soon as possible.
Additionally, if you are applying to private or independent schools using the Common App, the majority of those schools require that you submit a CSS Profile.
- Deadlines for CSS Profile vary amongst schools. Be sure to check each school for their CSS Profile deadline.
Scholarships: Welcome to the Wonderful World of More Free Money
Aside from the grants and loans you can get from FAFSA or the California Dream Act, there are many organizations offering free college money to help motivated students achieve their goals. You can get scholarships if you are:
- Going to a 4 year University (CSU, UC, Private)
- Going to a 2 year Community College
- Attending Vocational/ Career Training
Scholarships can bring your overall college costs down and help fill any gaps left after you get your merit and need based aid. It may take some effort, but research and diligence is key. So much scholarship money goes unclaimed each year because, simply, nobody has applied.
Tips when applying for scholarships: Before you begin your scholarship search, start off by making a list of interests and background information that is specific to YOU. What clubs are you involved in? What ethnicity are you? Do you play an instrument? Are you a first generation student? What is your cultural heritage? Are you interested in STEM? Are you in the foster system?
Any and all of these questions are important because if you search for scholarships specific to you, then your entry will stand out. Apply to as many scholarships as possible to increase your chances!
