Child Abuse

Soundtrack for Social Justice by: Katlyn Hatley

Child abuse is a very touchy and sadly, a very common problem. There are so many cases of child abuse that are not turned into the police and the children have to suffer through it. Although child abuse is usually physical harm, that's not always the case. Child abuse can be a range of verbal abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. I chose child abuse as my topic because I feel that child abuse should be monitored more and we should fight to keep children safer. Children that are being abused are more likely to end up being depressed and have more thoughts of suicide, we should try harder to put an end to this.

"Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride (2008)

"Concrete Angel" is a perfect example of how child abuse can be happening and sadly, no one knows and no one can stop it. Martina McBride sings about how child abuse can emotionally and physically harm the victim. The little girl she is singing about is a "Concrete Angel," meaning that she is strong and no matter the pain, her wings will help heal her and bring her to a much happier place.

"Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States, involving more than 6 million children."

Martina McBride - Concrete Angel

"Blown Away" by Carrie Underwood (2012)

"Blown Away" by Carrie Underwood indirectly relates to my topic, child abuse. In this song she mentions a "tear-soaked whiskey memory," so this could be referring to child abuse that was brought on by someone with an alcohol problem.

"Approximately 5 children die every day because of child abuse."

Carrie Underwood - Blown Away

"Broken Girl" by Matthew West

"Broken Girl" by Matthew West is directly about sexual child abuse, he is singing about a little girl who has been physically and emotionally abused; now she is a "Broken Girl." Child abuse and rap can make the victim feel worthless and unloved, such a sad thing

"1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually abused before they reach age 18."

Broken Girl (Lyrics) by Matthew West

"Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson (2004)

"Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson is about how because she was abused as a child, it has caused her to not be able to trust anyone. In the video you will see how her dad abuses her, not necessarily physically but emotionally and mentally. He ignores her and doesn't show her the love that a child needs, that has caused her not be able to trust another man in her life.

"14% of all men and 36% of all women in prison were abused as children."

Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You

"Little House" by The Fray (2005)

"Little House" is not directly about child abuse but it does have a connection to it. "A part of you that'll never show, You're the only one that'll ever know" these lyrics are representing how a lot of child abuse goes without being turned in or anyone else even knowing about it.

"A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds."

The Fray - Little House - Lyrics

"Alyssa Lies" by Jason Michael Carroll (2007)

"Alyssa Lies," is a very emotional and sad song that shows how hard it is on children to hide that they are being abused. Teachers and other children may be able to notice the child acting distant or bruises if it is physical abuse, they have to lie about things and that can be mentally abusing.

"Individuals who reported six or more adverse childhood experiences had an average life expectancy two decades shorter than those who reported none."

Alyssa Lies - Music Video - Jason Michael Carrol

"Runaway Love" by Ludacris (2006)

This song shows a different form of child abuse, rather than physical or sexual, this song relates to emotional and mental abuse of a child. Ludacris talks about how the little girl's father left and her mother was on drugs, leaving her all alone. To see a child having to go through that is such a sad thing, no one to take care of them and give them the love that they need.

"Adults with substance use disorders are 2.7 times more likely to report abusive behavior and 4.2 times more likely to report neglectful behavior toward their children."

Ludacris - Runaway Love ft. Mary J. Blige

"Warrior" by Demi Lovato (2013)

Demi Lovato sings about how being abused has made her a "Warrior" and it has made her stronger, because she is a survivor. Although child abuse is a terrible thing, I think anyone can get through it with the right help and care from people. If you know about child abuse that is happening you should always report it, for the sake of the child and it's future life.

"In the United States, more than 4 children die from child abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Over 70% of these children are below the age of 3."

Demi Lovato - Warrior (Audio)
