MESSAGE FROM MR. GARNASS
Happy February!
Well... Apparently Punxsutawney Phil DID NOT see his shadow and this theory indicates spring is right around the corner... We certainly hope this theory proves true! 🌞
We have been living life in the fast lane the past few weeks at BFHS. Semester two is off and running. Our school counselors have been preparing our students for registration and gearing up for the 2024-25 school year. We were also excited to welcome our Future Freshmen on Tuesday, Jan. 23rd as we hosted students and their parents/guardians.
Next Grade Post: is on February 14th.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Spring conferences are right around the corner and once again will be held in person and virtually on Monday, March 4th and Thursday, March 7th from 3:00-7:00 pm. A web link to sign up for conferences will be sent out in information prior. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for you and your child to have a conversation with their respective teacher(s) about any questions or concerns you may have.
Seniors (Class of 2024): Please continue to check your emails on a regular basis as we approach the month of March. There will be our annual senior meeting prior to spring break that will kick off the scholarship season. We will also provide information and a timeline leading up to commencement in May. Reminder: All Silver Cord hours must be submitted and verified by May 1st! Parents will also receive the information we share with the senior class following spring break. Finish the year strong!
Before we all know it, spring break will be staring us down...
Have a GREAT rest of your February!
Respectfully,
Erik Garnass

Congratulations to the following students who will receive their hard-earned award at the Iowa FFA State Convention in April: Lauryn Fuchs (11), Emma Lihs (11), Brayden Parks (11), Garrett Von Stein (11)
In addition, Emma Lihs went through the process of interviews for becoming a FFA District Officer. She completed a test, 7 on 1 interview, and a 2 on 1 interview. Emma was recently informed that she made the ballot and will be running for District Secretary on March 2nd.

Bluejay Way Award Winner
During a recent home varsity basketball event, high school student Elise Sanny was presented with the Bluejay Way Community Partner Award for her involvement in spearheading a new food pantry within the district.
"Elise Sanny is the first student recipient in the district to receive our Bluejay Way Award! For her 4-H project this past summer at the Polk County Fair, she put a plan in place to support the secondary food pantry right here at Bondurant-Farrar. Her plan earned her a purple ribbon and when school started, she began her work. With help from our FFA chapter, they organized and hosted two “Pack the Cab” events during a home volleyball and football game where fans brought items to donate and place them directly into a tractor cab located in the parking lot! In addition, she collects cans regularly from Williamson Auto here in Bondurant. The money from the can redemption goes directly to funding needs for the pantry.
We are so appreciative and proud of Elise for her work in helping to kickstart the secondary food pantry here in our district and believe these efforts embody exactly what it means to be doing things #TheBluejayWay!"
Thank you for being an excellent role model to your peers and all congratulations, Elise!

SAFE2DRIVE
Here's an exciting opportunity for your school to offer Driver Education to your students online. Safe2Drive’s Iowa Parent-Taught Driver Education course allows parents to teach their teens Driver Education in order to qualify for their driver’s license. The course consists of online coursework and an instruction manual for parents to teach the behind-the-wheel component of Driver Education to their teen. As of July 1st, the Parent-Taught Driver Education online course is no longer exclusive for families of homeschooled children but is available to any student who would otherwise qualify and who is currently attending a public school or accredited nonpublic school, or who is receiving homeschool education under chapter 299A.
If you’d like to offer your students Safe2Drive’s online course, we can provide you with a promo code for your students to get a discount on the course price, or we can pay you an affiliate fee for each student you refer—it’s up to you! This is a great way to provide a low-cost and convenient option for your students to fulfill their Driver Education requirement and get their driver’s license. Your school can even earn money while doing it!
So, what are you waiting for? Promo code: BFHS10
We look forward to working together to provide Iowa’s teens with the education they need to be safe on the road.
Sincerely,
Penny Beaty, Marketing Manager

We will be utilizing English classes to present information on registration and college/career planning, handout registration sheets, and collect sheets. Students will enter their course requests on the day the forms are due. Each grade will have a registration sheet that will need to be signed by a parent/guardian in order to enter their course requests.
Juniors- Will receive forms on Tuesday, Jan. 30th and the form will be due Feb. 2nd
Sophomores- Will receive forms on Tuesday, Feb. 6th and forms will be due Feb. 9th
Freshmen- Will receive forms on Tuesday, Feb. 13th and forms will be due Feb. 16th
Seniors: For students planning on attending a post-secondary institution in the fall, the FAFSA needs to be completed by the financial aid priority date. The following are the Regent Universities financial aid priority date:
Iowa State- February 1st
Iowa-February 15th
UNI- February 15th
If you have any questions regarding post-secondary planning, please let your school counselor know. It is important to fill out the FAFSA if you are planning on attending a two-year or four-year college. Some institutions do require the FAFSA to be completed in order to qualify for scholarships.
If you need help completing the FAFSA you may contact Jo Riley, CCTC at rileyj@bfschools.org or ICAN at www.icansucceed.org
If your child is going to attend a community college, the Last Dollar Scholarship has many scholarship opportunities. The Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship covers any tuition gaps not covered by other federal and state grants/scholarships for eligible Iowa residents enrolled in targeted, high-demand career and technical programs at DMACC. This means that if the program is eligible for Last Dollar Scholarship funds, it would be completely paid for. This first-of-its-kind financial assistance program offers an affordable pathway into many exciting and growing careers. Iowa employers are hiring graduates with these skills. You must fill out the FAFSA to qualify for Last Dollar Scholarship money. If your senior is looking at a community college other than DMACC, the school counselors are happy to help them check to see if their program qualifies for Last Dollar Scholarship. Here is a link to the list of programs that qualify for Last Dollar Scholarship at DMACC: https://dmacc.edu/fin_aid/Pages/lds-dmacc-programs.aspx
Seniors should make sure they are checking their email and the school counseling website for scholarship updates. It is important to be aware of deadlines for scholarships. Please do not wait until the last minute to request letters of recommendations to meet scholarship requirements. Also, if you need a transcript, you will still request this on the high school website. Here is the link to request transcripts: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVH1nYaBaAYEnSEGRgPOYKiGB3QZP37lekMZgNLDsvOaqd1w/viewform

RESOURCES WHEN IN NEED
REMINDERS
REMINDERS
Just a reminder of a couple things at the beginning of the new semester.
All Juniors need a second dose of the meningococcal vaccine to be able to return to school next fall. If you completed CPR during health 1, this completes the graduation requirement.
2) All incoming 9th graders need a dental screening.
3) All athletes need a sports physical prior to participation - this includes marching band, as well as cheerleading, dance and sports.
4) Finally, a reminder of the policy regarding medications at school (from the handbook)
No medications are to be carried during school hours by students nor stored in pockets, purses, school bags, lunch boxes, lockers, teacher desks, sports equipment bags, etc. The only exception would be with a physician’s written orders and a parent/guardian written authorization for a student to carry the medication with him/her for self-administration as necessary (ie. inhalers, diabetic supplies, emergency medications).
FF. Administration of Medication to Students

Over the counter medication: All over the counter medications shall be maintained in the original container in which they were purchased.
B. Parent/Guardian written consent on a dated statement:
A parent/guardian signature on a statement requesting and authorizing the school personnel to administer the medication must accompany the medication. BP 507.2
C. Record of administration:
Each time the medication is administered, a record shall be maintained in the nurse's office.
The record shall include the student's name, date, time, name of the medication, amount
given per electronic charting.
D. Medication reactions:
Any unusual conditions or behaviors following the administration of medication
should be reported to the school nurse, if available or to the parent/guardian

All medications will be stored in a secure area, accessible only to those who are authorized to administer the medication.
The building principal shall designate those in each building who are

Students entering 12th grade next year
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Spring Break is a great time to get your child caught up on or AHEAD of all Iowa required and
recommended vaccines.
During the summer, back-to-school appointments and sports physicals fill up fast and your child
may not be able to see their provider in time.
Students who do not have proof of required vaccines on the first day of the 2024-2025 school
year, will not be allowed to start school. All students entering 12th grade next school year are
required to have proof of receiving a booster Meningitis vaccination, or alternatively, a valid
Medical or Religious Exemption Certificate on file with the school nurse before the first day of the
school year on August 23, 2024.
Hundreds of students have already been vaccinated and many more have scheduled their
appointments. Have you scheduled your child’s appointment yet?
Now is the time to make your child’s appointment to see their health care doctor or provider for
their required vaccines including the meningitis vaccine.
If you have questions regarding health insurance or do not have a doctor or medical home, please
reach out to your Polk County Health Department at the contact information below.
