PES Principal Message
September 28, 2023
We're already hearing sounds of the holidays in the building as our Puster 3rd/4th grade choir begins their practices!
First grade students created a class Constitution on Constitution Day.
We love Reading with the Leopards!
Puster Families,
The calendar says it's fall even if the weather is still not on board! Next week, we are kicking off October and making fall happen at Puster! Staff and students are invited to wear their fall colors everyday (staff get the added bonus of a jeans week - exciting stuff!). The MOST fall fun will take place on Thursday evening at our Puster PTO Fall Family Fun Night. I've seen the behind the scenes planning and it is going to be SO fun! The deadline to preorder your Hat Creek dinner is TODAY.
Our first Book Fair of the year begins on Monday next week! Please see Mrs. Stewart's message below for shopping and spending details. I'm sure our students could use some fresh reads for the upcoming fall break!
All 4th grade mascot applications are due next week! Please see Mrs. Schirf's note below for details. This is a fun role that is a BIG secret all year long. Mascot identities are finally revealed at the LAST Puster Pride of the year!
Speaking of Puster Pride, we look forward to hosting our first Puster Pride assembly next Friday. Parents of students receiving recognition will receive an invitation from his/her homeroom teacher by the end of the day tomorrow. I will send out a special Fast Pass link for check-in at the beginning of next week.
On a safety related note, we have noticed more and more students waiting at the back courtyard door earlier and earlier. Our doors open at 7:30 a.m. daily unless students are attending a before school activity such as chess club or Starbooks. Please do not drop your child off early and leave. They may wait at the door while you wait in your car until the doors open. Thank you for your help with ensuring our kids are supervised at all times.
Finally, a reminder that tomorrow, 9/29 is a student holiday/teacher planning day. Our campus and office will be closed as staff attend trainings. We look forward to seeing everyone back together on Monday!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Puster Proud,
Holly
MAP Growth Testing Update
MAP Growth testing will be completed at the end of this week. We are looking forward to using the information it provides to meet the needs of our students. On October 4th, we will send home the MAP Growth Family Report with each student. This report will provide you with information about your child’s performance on the assessment. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher or campus administrator. You may also find helpful information in the MAP Growth Parent FAQ and in the MAP Growth FAQ.

Brooke Grall: Music Specialist
Mrs. Grall hit the ground running this year! She exemplifies "well-rounded" and "open to the challenges of learning" on a daily basis. She already has her choir group formed and practicing before school each week. She puts a LOT of work into organizing our yearly 3rd and 4th grade talent show. That is just fraction of all she will do for and with our students this year. We are thankful for her positive energy, solution oriented mindset and amazing talents at Puster!
Leticia Carroll: Lead Custodian
Leticia works endlessly to keep Puster a clean, safe, and happy place for our staff, students and families. She is quick to respond to needs as they arise on campus and always has the foresight to prepare ahead for events and activities on campus.
Attendance Updates
Thank you to our Puster PTO for the sweet treats served to our staff recently!
Lunch Visitors
Parents are welcome to visit their child(ren) for lunch any day. We ask that you eat with your child only (no friends) at either a back table in the cafeteria or outside in the courtyard/picnic area. Please follow the check in procedures below when joining us for lunch.

We accept cash, cards or the easiest, safest method, a book fair gift card!
Buy a book fair gift card here: https://efairs.literati.com/product-category/gift-cards/
In the hands of students, digital gift cards are a safe and easy payment method that won’t get lost in a backpack. They make great gifts for teachers!
Gift cards can be purchased from your online fair at efairs.literati.com. Customers can buy gift cards in person as well, so long as they have the recipient’s email address at checkout.
HOW THEY WORK
Purcase online at https://efairs.literati.com/product-category/gift-cards/
A gift card code is then sent to the recipient’s email inbox.
To redeem, the cashier scans the gift card code at checkout, or the recipient inputs the code themselves online.
Gift cards never expire, so students and teachers can use any remaining funds on their next Literati Book Fair!
Teacher book fair wishlists are a great way for the community to give back to their teachers. This year ,there will be a teacher wishlist stand full of wishlist tickets.
Can’t make it in? Try our Online Companion Fair https://efairs.literati.com/books/ and select Puster Elementary our online fair allows the whole community to shop our book fair, including those who aren’t able to visit in person. Online companion fairs feature an expanded catalog of books, giving you a bigger array of titles to choose from. That way everyone can find a new favorite read!
When our book fair ends, our online fair will close and all online purchases will be added to our total book fair sales. Then they will ship our school’s online book orders, which should arrive at our school within 10 days, depending on carrier transit times. Shipments will contain a packing list with teacher and student names, I will then distribute orders.

Notes from Officer Emory
Good Afternoon Puster Families,
This is your School Marshal, Steven Emory.
I will be teaching the students the AVOID / DENY / DEFEND in the upcoming months.
These 3 techniques are used during an act of violence (Robbery, Hostage situation, workplace violence, active shooter, etc.) so these techniques will serve them through their entire life and will be useful for you as well.
AVOID: Strats with state of mind.
Pay attention to your surroundings.
Have an exit plan
Move away from the threat as quickly as possible
Create barriers and distance between you and the threat.
DENY: when getting away is difficult or impossible.
Keep distance between yourself and the threat
Slow down the threat with barriers
Turn lights off and dont for get to silence your phone
Remain out of sight and quiet, hid behind large objects
Continue to look for an exit.
DEFEND: Your life depends on it.
If you can't do the first two, prepare to defend yourself
Be aggressive and committee to your actions
This is not the time to fight fairly. Don't give your life away.
Do you have a family plan?
This is a plan if something goes wrong, it could be at the store, park, any public place or at home.
Example what would you do if someone was trying to kick in your front door. Would your kids know what to do? Do your kids know what to do during a fire?
Scripting:
This is where you role play scenarios in your head. Preparing yourself for what may happen.
Example if I am at a restaurant I may say if a man with a gun walks in. I will tell my family to exit out the back or to get under the table.

Thank you for helping us to make Puster a safe environment for our students and staff. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Have a great rest of your week,
Steven Emory,
