COHERENT INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEM
Common myths about adding rigor to the classroom: rigor means more homework, rigor means doing more, providing supports means lessening rigor, and rigor is not for everyone. See the link below for 22 tips for adding rigor in the classroom.
An easy way of adding rigor and DOK Levels 3 & 4 in your classroom is to utilize the Achievement Level Descriptors created by GADOE for GMAS guidance. K, 1st, and 2nd grades-even though these (ALDs) begin in 3rd grade, you will notice that what is listed in the beginning learner category is the K/1st grade standards, and many of the 2nd grade standards are in the developing learner category. We all need to be on the same page regarding what our students need to know and where we need to take them.
GOFAR is another standards-based resource that can add rigor to your classroom. The majority of GOFAR questions are also DOK Levels 3 & 4. At the minimum, there should be a GOFAR Question of the Day and your spiral reviews should reflect questions at a variety of DOK Levels. You can use the GOFAR questions as examples on how to write new questions. Erin will create a bank of GOFAR questions for each grade-subject area to help lesson the frustration caused by GOFAR. You just need to let me know you want me to do this!
EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
PROFESSIONAL CAPACITY
Highest-Desired Effect #2 ~ Piagetian Programs
These are teaching methods based on Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development & his concepts of children's stages of early learning.
Piagetian Stages:
- Pre-Operational Stage (2-7 years old)-Children are able to understand basic concepts and symbols, but do not yet understand concrete logic and cannot mentally manipulate information.
- Concrete Operational Stage (7-12 years old)-Children in these ages start solving problems in a more logical fashion but abstract, hypothetical thinking has not yet evolved.
Classroom Examples: Focus on thinking processes rather than the outcomes.
- Teach problem-solving skills
- Reciprocal teaching
- Concept Mapping
- Mastery-based learning
- Worked Examples
- Specific, relevant feedback on where students need to go in their learning

SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Centervention is a website containing all kinds of social, emotional, interpersonal, and behavioral lesson plans, posters, and resources. Find free resources to use in your classroom.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Check out these reading bookmarks that can be used in small groups to help students lead reading groups (reciprocal teaching). These would also be a great resource for students to keep at home and use with their parents!

- When you receive new students, they must take the benchmarks asap. Remember students enrolled for 65% of the school year, count towards your teacher growth score for TKES. Please email me if I need to help w/ these benchmarks. I will do my next to roster check, comparing benchmarks and your class rosters, at the end of September.
- Thank you to Ms. Truitt, Ms. Ward, and Mr. Potts for entering the GKIDS data before the due date! I appreciate you!!
- Let Erin know if you want me to create a bank of GOFAR questions for your grade level to make it easier to navigate. I will do this, but I need to know which grade levels are wanting this so I am not doing a bunch of work that is never going to be used. :)
