Candler Elementary Updates
This month we have Talent Show try-outs for students. Once selected, students will begin staying after school on club days to rehearse and prepare for our spring show. Clubs will meet after school on Tuesdays January 17 & 31.
Parents please come out to meet our new Superintendent, Dr. Rob Jackson, on Tuesday, January 31 at 6:00pm at Sand-Hill Venable Elementary for an Enka Town Hall meeting. He will be addressing issues in our community and welcoming your feedback.
As you know, weather in the mountains can be tricky in January and February. Please remember to update the office with any phone number changes so that we can reach you in case of an emergency and make changes in our computer system. Our phone messenger and Dojo systems are linked through PowerSchool and will send you alerts for weather related closings, but News13 and radio are also good sources of information.

This month in 4th grade, students will work on division strategies by finding the quotient (the
answer when you divide) and the remainder (the number left over) of up to three-digit numbers
divided by one-digit numbers. Students will continue learning how a challenging setting or
physical environment can change a person when reading Science Fiction. Students will learn
about physical and behavioral adaptations.
In Dual Language SLA, students will be reading about ancient civilizations: Rome; we will be
exploring historical events as well as traditional stories about its culture, development and social organization. Students will write an informative text considering their understandings on this topic. Besides, they will recreate a play about Damocles and Julio Cesar.

In Media classes, K through 2nd students will be reading several retellings of classic stories and fairy tales and learning how we can recreate favorite stories with a variety of technology tools. In 3rd and 4th, students will begin research units, with third grade focusing on space missions and 4th grade focusing on geography, mountains, and other environmental features.
In Physical Education class students will be learning basketball skills. They will be practicing dribbling, passing, and shooting skills using various games.
This month in art students will be learning about the art elements in flags (color, line, shape), and starting work on a flag- either a US flag, or a country that represents their family heritage.
In music, K-1 students are strengthening singing skills and are learning simple music notation. Second graders are focusing on songs from the American West, while third and fourth graders learn the recorder and how to read music notes.
This month in large group counseling students will be learning more about calm spots in their classrooms and self-regulation strategies. Calm spots are quiet spaces where students can go when they start to feel overwhelmed, frustrated or just need some quiet time.
