Uplift Hampton Preparatory M.S.
2018-2019 Weekly Memo
A Message from the Director...
Greetings Parents & Guardians-
I hope that you all have had a great weekend though it was a bit rainy and cool. Tomorrow, we will embark on another day of school. For some scholars, they are excited and for others they aren't; this is where we need your help. When your scholars aren't motivated, encourage them by supporting the mission that we set out to accomplish everyday; which is to get 100% of our scholars college ready.
The only way that we can do this is by holding scholars to high expectations academically and behaviorally. Parents, we want your scholars to be successful and will not allow for anything other than that. Mediocrity is not an option, and I ask that you don't allow it either. Please help us by ensuring that your scholars are ready for school every day. This includes having their material for every class, notebooks, pens, pencils, binders, spirals, novels, articles, a positive mindset, and enthusiasm to learn, etc. If your scholars are empty handed then, they aren't ready. If they are belligerent and attitudinal, then they aren't ready. If they have a smile and all of their supplies, then they are ready. I know that you don't want us calling you for your scholars lack of preparation, but we will have no choice, if they aren't ready to learn.
This relationship is reciprocal. When scholars meet their teachers half way, the teachers can then educate your scholars at a high level, give them exactly what they need to be successful, and prepare them for the next level of learning. It is a partnership! Please help us to help your scholar.
I know that Dean Smalls sent home a notice about the hallways, and I want to ensure that everyone understands the rationale in context of our school. 6th & 7th grade earned silent hallway transitions. They earned this by not meeting expectations. Some of you may have wondered what warranted such action; allow me to explain.
I met with the 7th graders and Dean Smalls met with the 6th graders, to discuss the importance of making the proper choices; including meeting expectations, trying hard to excel academically, and to become the best version of themselves everyday. We stressed the importance of choice; because everyday scholars and adults alike, make choices whether positive or negative. Each grade level was given a reminder of the expectations in the hallway; which is a professional tone (level 1) and to walk expeditiously and orderly to their next class to eliminate being tardy, and missing any component of the lesson. Most scholars chose not to do so. Scholars were reminded that the hallway transitions would become silent, if they continued to choose to disregard the expectations.
Ultimately, the purpose is about meeting expectations and being accountable to ones self. In this instance it is behaviorally, and is translating positively in the classroom, as scholars are much more focused upon entry.
I ask you to support us in ensuring that scholars meet expectations and understand the importance of their education. This isn't meant to be punitive in nature but as a means to demonstrate the importance of accountability. Help your scholars to be successful by holding them accountable and not holding them back by making excuses for them.
We all want to achieve greatness and we can't do it moving in opposite directions, we must be on the same page to achieve success. Again, this is a partnership. We need you to make a positive impact. Join us in our journey!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Parks
