When They See Us, They Will See Greatness!
A Message from our CEO and Principal
Greetings GLA West Families-
It has been a hard and dispiriting week for black people in this country. As millions of people across the country take to the streets to raise their voices in response to the senseless killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, there has been a lot to process. In Philadelphia, we have seen our very own community fall victim to looting and the destruction of essential businesses.
So as the parents of black and brown children, we want to say thank you! Thank you for the battles you are fighting, big and small, to raise up a generation of black excellence, in spite of all that is occurring. Educating children during these times can be daunting. There is no playbook or manual. Nevertheless, we recognize the need for healing and how important the role of education is in helping to combat injustice. With that in mind, we have used Harambee sessions this week as an opportunity to help scholars process. It has been encouraging to hear the perspective of our scholars and the ideas they have about how to bring about change.
We are also hosting a town hall tonight for parents that we strongly encourage you to attend. We hope to provide a space for us all to listen, vent, strategize, and channel our justifiable frustration into effective action.
Be safe and be encouraged,
Dr. Booker and Principal Tyler

IMPORTANT 8TH GRADE UPDATE
Issuing over $60,000 in refunds comes as a tremendous burden to the school, as we had already paid for our scholars to travel and cannot recoup those funds. Nevertheless, we felt it important to prioritize returning money to our families. All families can expect to receive refunds via mail by the end of May. This has proven to be a daunting process but we are thankful for your patience and support. At this point, you should have been contacted to confirm your mailing address. If you have questions or concerns regarding your refund, please contact Ms. Anderson at aanderson@ga-schools.org.

It will involve watching videos and tutorials made live every day on You Tube at 4pm, live chats with Ms. Jiana and other scholars on Monday and Wed at 4pm, and Friday Tik Tok and Kahoot challenges using content from the videos. We'll have prizes for the winners.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER!
As promised here’s the list ingredients for the playdough that Ms. Shabazz showed us how to make in last week's Dinner with the Principal.
You will need:
1cup of flour
1/4 cup salt
food coloring (optional)
1 cup of water (ADD A SMALL AMOUNT EACH TIME, DO NOT POUR ENTIRE CUP OF WATER INTO FLOUR AT ONCE)
- Mix flour and salt together in a bowl
- Drop a few drops of food coloring in your water. Add a little water to flour mixture to combine.
- Continue stirring until its nice and thick
- At this point with floured hands and surface take dough out and begin kneading it until you achieve a smooth ball of dough.
- If dough is too wet add more flour and just play with it until you achieve the right consistency.
- Store in a sealed ziploc bag.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!
