Sussex Star Bursts!
Principal's Corner
What a week! The week after Thanksgiving is always exciting. Students are excited about the upcoming holiday season. This year students had the added excitement of shopping at the Holiday Shop. THANK YOU to the HSA and all volunteers who made the Holiday Shop a huge success. To learn more about our volunteer options and guidelines, click the following link. Volunteer Guidelines SY 2021-2022.
As we see a rise in COVID cases at the PreK-5 level, as reported on the COVID-19 Dashboard, it is extremely important that students come to school each day with a properly fitted mask that completely covers both the mouth and nose. It is recommended that students bring an extra mask or two each day, stored in a ziploc bag or other sanitary container. We continue to rely on your cooperation and partnership to keep our students safe. Below is essential information to assist towards this goal:
- Please continue to conduct the required Daily Student Screening and alert the school nurse immediately if your child exhibits symptoms listed or if you answer YES to any screening questions.
- If you or someone in your household is sick, please do not send your children to school. Contact the school nurse (laura.mojena@msdk12.net.) if you are unsure whether to send your child to school.
- If any household member is scheduled to take a COVID test whether exhibiting symptoms or as a requirement for any reason OR is awaiting COVID test results, be sure to get in touch with Nurse Mojena immediately for further instructions.
- If a household member tests positive additional quarantine guidelines will apply to any unvaccinated student that resides in the household. Because such situations are complicated and nuanced, please be sure to remain in contact with the school nurse on behalf of your student so she may provide the appropriate time frame for quarantine.
- If students are eligible for virtual instruction, our teachers can prepare for virtual instruction within 24-48 hours. Students have access to google classroom from home at any time, and assignments will be available while awaiting instruction to begin. Thank you for supporting our teachers who are teaching in person and virtually at the same time.
Please know that I am here to help and support you in any way that I can. Feel free to reach out to me directly at lorri.vaccaro@msdk12.net
Be well,
Lorri Vaccaro, Principal

Report Card Update
Eng: PreK-5 Trimester Assessment System
Span: PreK-5 Trimester Assessment System
Some highlights about PreK-5 schools are below.
I. Trimester Reporting Periods
- Trimester 1: September 9 - December 10
- Trimester 2: December 13 - March 18
- Trimester 3: March 21 - June 20
II. Standards-Based Report Cards
- K-5 report cards are aligned to trimester reporting periods and provide feedback on student achievement toward learning standards.
- The first two report card distributions will be coupled with parent conferences and standardized testing data.
- The final trimester report card will be administered after the academic year and include a narrative on student growth, development, and learning.
III. Parent Conferencing
- Parent Conferences will occur twice during the academic year and align with the first two trimester reporting periods. These conferences will provide more dialogue and transparency related to student growth and development toward learning standards, iReady diagnostic testing, and teacher-developed assessments.
- Parents will need to complete the COVID Health Screener form in order to attend in-person conferences. You may click the link to download a copy and bring it with you or we will have copies for you as you arrive. If you are completing the form upon arrival, please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled conference time. COVID Health Screener Form. Please see the following communication that was sent on December 4th regarding conference protocols.
