Mavericks April Update
April edition
LANGUAGE ARTS
Book in Bags are still being sent home. Remind your child to bring it back the next day. We use them several times a week at teacher table. We usually don't have any extras to give them if they forget.
Our students are also in the process of finishing up their class book to send off to print. You do not have to buy a book. But, we ask that if you choose not to buy a book, please check off "no" and sign the form. The publisher would like a form for each student. The kids are so excited about becoming real life authors. What a great experience for them!
SCIENCE
First graders can tell you about Living and Nonliving things as well as characteristics of many animals. This would be great conversations while driving in the car, at the dinner table, or even while tucking them into bed at night.
In the coming days your student will be making a habitat in class. Just like with our Space Unit they may need some supplies from home to help them create it.
MATH
We will begin measuring using standard, and nonstandard units such as cubes and paperclips. We will learn to use different measuring tools, and comparing lengths of objects.
We will also be telling time to the nearest hour or half hour on an analog clock as well as a on a digital clock.
Keep practicing these skills at home too. Students need to know that we use money for lots and lots of things. They also need to know that we use measurement even in cooking.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
ARBORETUM FIELD TRIP
What you should know
If your child is suffering from allergies (I think most are) please send them with a small package of tissues for them to keep in their pocket. While walking around there won't be anywhere to get tissues for them.
Your child may wear a hat. Please have your child wear CLOSED TOES SHOES/TENNIS SHOES. We will be doing a lot of walking and this will ensure comfort and safety.
Chaperones must have cleared their background check. If you were chosen as a chaperone you will also need to fill out the Travel paper that was sent home with your child.
