Thinking of our conference the other day about vocabulary - I have a great example of "social language" and how our kiddos' lives are different than us
All the second grade classes were writing thank you notes to first responders (after talking about 9-11). Bethany told her class that my husband was a police officer and he will take the letters to his fellow officers. One student wrote:
"Dear Mes. Meller boyfriden you and your crow yall are the best policelis."
I am calling Jerry my boyfriden from now on! Ha!

Kyler struggles with his attitude and often disrespects those in authority. This was especially true during lunch with Mrs. Linda. For the first month, there was almost a daily report of his attitude or mouth getting him in trouble. Kyler and I discussed how showing someone respect and kindness can go a long way. I asked Kyler to try to show kindness to Mrs. Linda through kind words and helpfulness. I challenged him to see if this would make his and her lunchtimes better. Several times in the last month as we were leaving the lunch room, I would hear Kyler say to Mrs. Linda, "Have a nice day!" I also have not had a negative report during lunch since that talk. When I asked Mrs. Linda about taking a photo with Kyler due to his growth in attitude and respect, she was happy to oblige. She said that Kyler has shown great improvement in the lunchroom and she appreciated his effort.
