Kyle R. Wilson Elementary
School Counseling Program
What is happening this month:
During the month of September we, Kyle R. Wilson, are focusing on RESPONSIBILITY! Each month the school will focus on one character trait. At the end of each month the teachers will pick two students from their classrooms that they feel have mastered that trait. The students selected will received a spirit stick!
This month Mrs. James and Ms. Orgeron went into K-2 classes and did an introduction lesson. We talked about what a school counselor does, how they can talk to us, and where our offices are. We read each class a book about what the role of a school counselor is. We will also be going into 3-5 to start our in class lessons this month. We will be on a nine week rotation: grades 3-5, first and third nine weeks and grades K-2, second and fourth nines weeks.
With 5th grade we are doing a project based lesson on multiple intelligence which will span over four lessons during the first nine weeks. These lessons will have to students working in groups to create a project based on their intelligence to present to their class. Our objectives for the project bases lesson are critical-thinking skills, time- management, self-motivation, communication skills, collaboration, and self-discipline.
With 3rd grade we will be doing four different lessons during the first nine weeks. The first lesson will be on bucket filling. This lesson is an anti-bullying lesson. The second lesson will be about non-verbal communication. The third lesson will talk about using "I statements", and focus on positive communication. Then The last lesson of will focus on teamwork and listening skills. Our objective for the first nine weeks are self-motivation, building relationships, coping skills, cooperation, and communication.
With 4th grade we will also be doing four different lessons during the first nine weeks. The first lesson will focus on perspective. This lesson will talk about how everyone perceives things differently. Then we will start a book series by Erin Frankel about bullying. This series is about one event and three different perspectives during it. The class will be split up into groups. One group will read WEIRD!, another will read DARE!, and the other will read TOUGH!. Each group will then decide how they want to retell or teach the class about the message in their assigned book. This project will happen over the course of three lessons. Our objective for the first nine weeks are communication and listening skills, building relationships, collaboration, coping skills, and demonstrating empathy.
* Anything that is assigned to the students during this nine weeks by the school counselors is to be done during classroom lesson time. We are not expecting students to bring it home and work on these projects.*
Also, we will be training our First Responders this month. Our First Responders program is something we have set-up that will help new students transition into out school. Two students (one boy and one girl) will be chosen from each class to be a First Responder. These students will be the welcoming committee for any new students that join the Kyle R. Wilson family.
