Red Ribbon Week
Please join the Howsman Family in making Red Ribbon Week a fun and memorable event by having your child participate in our themed days whether it be virtual or in person. See flyer below for specifics on themes.
Taking Care of SELF
The foundation for all healthy habits, from eating nutritious foods to using proper hygiene to dressing appropriately for the weather, begins in the preschool years. At the elementary level, it's all about laying the foundation of healthy habits. The following is a great acronym that Northside counselors use to talk to students about healthy choices.
S- Sleep
Review with students the importance of sleep and how it helps the body grow and be ready for the next day. As students get older the conversation can focus on appropriate ways of handling stress. If your child has trouble falling asleep model healthy winding down activities such as taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, aroma therapy, etc.
E - Exercise
Exercising is essential in keeping the body healthy. Assure that your son/daughter has had plenty of activity throughout the day. You may want to consider enrolling your child in a sport or maybe taking a daily family walk as a way for everyone to get in some physical activity.
L - Love
Have a discussion with your child about describing a caring adult in their life. As your child gets older the discussion can be more about friendships and who/what makes a healthy friendship.
F - Fun
Drug-Free Fun. Begin helping your child find their talent and ways for them to have fun. If your child loves sports, band, art, animals, dancing, nature, etc., get them involved in a school or community program where they can develop that skill. This way, as they get older, they already ways to have fun and not turn to unhealthy choices.
