Valentine's Day
It's hard to believe that we are ushering in the month of February. Students have had their groundhog fun as they explored the difference between folktales and folklore. Be sure to ask your child about Substitute Groundhog and Gretchen Groundhog, It's Your Day and the readers' theatre fun that accompanied them.
Leaving all of that behind comes Valentine's Day! I've enclosed a class list in today's Friday folder for those students who wish to exchange Valentines with their classmates. Please remember, though, that students who choose to send cards must do so for every classmate on the list. I intend to have students make bags next week, so feel free to send in the cards anytime after that time. Should you lose the class list anytime before Valentine's Day, an attachment may be downloaded by clicking the "Download" button at the bottom of the page.
On Valentine's Day, we will have a special snack. If you have volunteered to send items in, then I am sending a reminder sheet in today's folder. If you don't receive this reminder, then consider yourself "off the hook." We do so appreciate those of you who've helped us out on these fun days all throughout the year. We couldn't do it without your help.
Heart Heroes: Jump Rope for Heart
Also in today's folder you will find additional information about Heart Heroes (formerly Jump Rope for Heart), a way for our students to raise funds for The American Heart Association. Students were excited to learn about incentives for this fundraising effort during their P.E. class with Mrs. Treadway. For information about setting up a personal fundraising page for your child please click here, or simply download the app for your phone. Information about using the app and bringing those heart heroes to life via augmented reality may be found here.
Temperature and Time
In math will be in constant review of problem solving with money and entering other types of measurement such as temperature and time. Both of these concepts have been practiced on an (almost) daily basis during our calendar time, so an in-depth study will likely not be needed. We will be focused on the following essential questions:
- How do you read a thermometer?
- How do you compare units of time measurement?
- How do you tell time to the hour and the half hour?
- How do you use the minute hand to tell time to the quarter hour?
- How do you skip count by 5's to tell time?
If your child would like additional practice or review with money concepts, I'd recommend a visit to ixl Money P.18 and P.19. Click here to get there. Your child will need to remember his/her login (with the "@uccc" extension on it) and password information.
As we aim to infuse Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into our students' academic experiences, I find that there's no better time than during our study of the Iditarod and in tandem with the LES featured LifeSkills of problem solving and resourcefulness. You know what they say, "Necessity is the mother of invention." A need or problem encourages creative efforts to meet the need or solve the problem. Believe me, MANY needs tend to surface on a 1,049-mile journey through the vast Alaskan wilderness. Students' opportunities will be plentiful to address the following "I can..." statements:
* I can pose questions about a situation people want to change.
* I can make observations about a situation people want to change.
* I can obtain information about a situation people want to change.
* I can use data to define a simple problem that can be solved through the construction of a new or improved object or tool.
Important scientific vocabulary learned along the way will include:
- Engineering Design Process
- Ask, Explore, Model, Evaluate, Explain
- Problem
- Solution
- Construction
Gratitude Galore
As you might recall, I had surgery on Wednesday, and left the class in wonderful care with Mrs. Kahl, the former director of the Union County Public Library. I know the students were in good hands with her, and--even better--I know she was in good hands with my helpful students. I told her several times over that these kiddos can run this class. It is both my hope and intention to return to school on Monday, as my recovery is proceeding quite nicely. I know my students will be both cooperative and helpful to me as I make this return. Thank you to you for your concern, cooperation, and patience. I am so thankful for the families I am privileged to work alongside this school year!
