What's happening @ our Library?
Winter Edition
Where has Fall gone? It seems that we just ended with our beautiful Storybook Pumpkin Patch (see video below). A Big MAHALO to everyone who contributed such amazing creations.
November was a busy month, filled with lots of learning and fun. Our 4th and 5th graders played "The Game of Quotes" using several of the Nene Nominee books. See the link on the library website if you want to play at home. It's a great family game... and a clever way to engage with text. You might get some hilarious answers!
Using the November choice board, we learned about the Macy's Day Annual Parade and what kinds of jobs / career opportunities could be discovered with all the designing and production occurring. We also had fun exploring music with November percussion, using our hands as instruments. The board is still up on the library site. Check it out and explore the new DECEMBER choice board. There are so many ways to stay engaged while you are on winter break.
In this issue of our Library Leaflet you will find:

Wishing you all a safe and wonderful winter break!

Library Secret Service Club
I am really excited about the Library Secret Service club that started recently. Some amazing 5th graders volunteered to help keep our library in tip-top shape. They are learning about the organization of the library, shelf care, and a lot of technical details that go into making a library work.
One group of students help produce a PSA about book care. (See video below)
We are having a lot of wet books being returned which means a lot of damaged books. Please watch the video. The students did an amazing job on the PSA!
On that note, since it is our rainy season, I'd like to remind you that Books + Water make a dreadful combination.
Simple fix = ziploc baggie.
A gallon size baggie can fit most books and will provide a moisture barrier for the books in a backpack.
Please send your child to school with a gallon-size ziploc baggie.
Our books will be so happy!
Computer Coding
December kicked off with Hour of Code during the week of December 6 - 10. Most of the students got their login info to use Code.org. Code.org is a free platform that teaches coding in a friendly and fun way. Students as young as Kindergarten can easily drag and drop blocks to make things happen. It's amazing to watch the students take control of the computer in this way. "Library Coding Classes" are found on the Resource Tab. Check it out and have fun coding.
Meanwhile, students in G-103 (1st grade) had a few hands-on lessons with District Resource Teacher, Mr. Grant Toyooka, to introduce them to coding & algorithms, building up to using our tech devices called Unruly Splats. Photo above shows Mr. Roboto being programmed by the students to drop the piece of paper into the trash can. It was a great unplugged activity!
