LEVELING UP IN 2020
Howdy Hounds!
We hope everyone is having a wonderful spring break! The weather started out a little dreary...but made up for it now! We can't wait to hear what our hounds did over the break.
Please remember that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced updated COVID-19 international travel guidelines. Please be sure that you have reviewed these if your family traveled internationally over the break. You can reach out to your child's teacher or our nurses to confirm return to school dates as the following protocols are in place:
Any student or staff member who travels internationally will be required to quarantine upon return:
- Individuals who get tested for COVID-19 three to five days after they return from travel must quarantine for seven days.
- Individuals who do not get tested after they return from travel must quarantine for 10 days.
- Lamar CISD students who travel internationally will attend virtual classes for the recommended quarantine period upon their return.
Please help us keep our students and staff safe by keeping your child home if they are exhibiting any Covid-19 symptoms. You can contact the front office, Nurse Everett or Nurse Snow and we will walk you through the steps for your child to return to campus. Also, if your child was exposed to anyone with Covid-19 over spring break, they will be required to quarantine. Thank you to all of our families that continue to be transparent and comply with our protocols to keep everyone safe and our school running!
Please note that the last day of the third nine weeks is Friday, March 26th. The fourth nine weeks begins Monday, March 29th. Any students that made an adjustment to their fourth nine weeks learning model (on-campus or virtual) will begin on the 29th. We will be reaching out to those families next week to share teacher assignment information.
Below is an important update about STAAR testing for our 3rd-5th graders. Please be sure to review the dates/information below.
Enjoy the glorious weather and time with your families! We look forward to seeing our Hounds Monday!
Sincerely,
Bethany Cunningham
Principal
STAAR Testing for 3rd-5th Graders
This school year, our students will be taking the STAAR test online with the exception of the 4th grade Writing STAAR. Our students are familiar with the online testing platform, as they completed two interim assessments this year online already. There are multiple accessibility features that the students are able to access during the online assessment as well. Taking STAAR online will allow us an extended testing window, which means our students will not have to test back-to-back, multiple days in a row.
Although the state has waived A-F accountability ratings for the 20-21 school year, the data we receive is an important component in our quest for continuous improvement and student growth. A student's STAAR results can help us determine how well prepared your child is for the next grade level and can provide details on what specific skills we need to work on. This helps us provide differentiated, focused learning opportunities for all of our Hounds.
Please mark your calendar for the following testing dates for our Hounds. Please note, if you have a virtual student, we will be reaching out to you to review your child's testing schedule. All tests will be administered on-campus.
Fourth Grade Writing STAAR (paper-based assessment): Tuesday, April 6th (on-campus and virtual students)
Third Grade Math STAAR: Thursday, May 13th
Third Grade Reading STAAR: Wednesday, May 19th
Fourth Grade Math STAAR: Wednesday, May 12th
Fourth Grade Reading STAAR: Tuesday, May 18th
Fifth Grade Math STAAR: Tuesday, May 11th
Fifth Grade Reading STAAR: Monday, May 17th
Fifth Grade Science STAAR: Thursday, May 20th
Third-Fifth Virtual Students Math STAAR Test: Friday, May 14th
Third-Fifth Virtual Students Reading STAAR Test: Friday, May 21st
Fifth Grade Virtual Students Science STAAR Test: Thursday, May 20th
It is very important that your student arrive to school on time on his or her testing day. They should be well-rested and have a good breakfast. Students will be allowed to bring a snack, but we will also provide a snack as needed because we will be on an alternative lunch schedule. A sports top water bottle will be allowed.
Morgan Elementary Zoning - Exception Process
Huggins Parents,
The Lamar CISD Board of Trustees has approved the new attendance zone for Morgan Elementary, opening January 2022. Your student may have been impacted by the rezoning. Please review the Board-approved attendance boundary map here to see the impacted areas.
All current 4th-grade students at Huggins Elementary have the ability to remain at their current campus for the upcoming school year via our exception process.
Transportation will not be provided to any student receiving an exception.
The exception process application can be found in the front office at Huggins Elementary (during normal business operations), or on the Lamar CISD website.
Please have all exception process applications completed and returned to the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education by April 9, 2021.

With new students enrolling, please see the map below to review our car line procedures. Please be sure that you are utilizing Charger Way and not u-turning at the Irene Stern Community Center. If you are not turning onto Charger Way from 1093, please be sure to u-turn at the end of the line to avoid cutting. Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and effective car rider line.
Please note that our doors open at 7:00am. To help the flow of our car rider line, please ensure that your child is ready to exit the car by having their mask on when you pull up. A reminder that our school day ends at 2:55pm this year. We are now dismissing at our standard time. We appreciate your patience as we continue to maximize the effectiveness of our car rider line. With the changes in protocols due to Covid-19, it is taking some additional time to load cars, as students are being dismissed from their individual classrooms.
Updated Quarantine Guidelines - LCISD
Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amended their COVID-19 quarantine guidance to allow two shorter options for the quarantine period.
Beginning Jan. 4, 2021, the District’s COVID-19 quarantine guidelines will be updated based on this guidance from the CDC, as well as guidance from TEA and UIL. This update does not impact individuals with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive test.
Individuals identified as being exposed to someone with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive test will be quarantined based on the following:
- 10 days after the last close contact, so long as they continue to monitor themselves daily for symptoms and take appropriate precautions through day 14
- 7 days after the last close contact, after receiving a negative test result (administered at least 5 days after the last close contact), so long as they continue to monitor themselves daily for symptoms and take appropriate precautions through day 14
Individuals who return to school or work from these shorter quarantine windows should regularly monitor themselves to ensure they remain symptom-free and take appropriate precautions for the duration of the 14-day incubation period. Individuals who develop symptoms at any time during the 14-day incubation period should not report to school or work.

As you know, we are seeing an uptick of positive Covid-19 cases in our area. In an effort to reduce exposure and limit the number of students and families that are required to quarantine, we are asking parents to partner with us to support our community. District protocols currently require all 4th and 5th graders to wear a mask at school. Our kinder-third graders wear a mask in the hallways, common areas, and during arrival and dismissal. We also have students wear a mask when they are in close contact with others or when social distancing is not feasibly possible, such as during small group instruction. When we have a positive case on campus, we are required to do extensive contact tracing to determine students/staff members that meet the definition of close contact. If the individual meets the definition, he or she is required to quarantine from school. To help reduce the number of of individuals required to quarantine, we are asking all students to wear masks. While we understand current district protocols do not require this in K-3, we are asking for a partnership in this process. We understand that there are many strong feelings regarding this topic, and we honor the decisions you have made for your child. We will remain in line with district protocols. We encourage you to talk to your student about wearing a mask at school to limit exposure and direct contact during this time.
Protective measures, including the use of face coverings, will be determined by the level of disease activity of COVID-19. The District will rely on data from the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Fort Bend County Health & Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to determine the disease activity level and the appropriate protective measures.
Students are required to bring two dress code approved masks/face coverings daily. One will be worn, and one additional mask/face covering will be brought in a sealed/ziploc bag. Labeling of the masks with a student name is suggested.
Mask questions we have received:
Can my child wear a face shield? Full-face shields may be used in place of a mask to protect eyes, nose, and mouth whenever a mask is not feasible or whenever the education context may benefit from the ability to see an individual’s full face.
Can my child wear a neck gaiter/buff? Yes, these are also approved.
Does the mask have to be a Huggins uniform color? No. Masks may be any color or design. However, no inappropriate language or images will be allowed.
***Please note that BSN Sports has graciously donated Huggins Hounds lanyards that will be given to students on the first day of school. Students will be able to use these lanyard to attach their masks so that they do not get lost.
