12 DISD Students Selected to TMEA All-State Band, Choir, Orchestra

Twelve students from Denton ISD's high school music programs have advanced through multiple rounds of auditions from September through January to be selected as TMEA All-State Musicians. These students will travel to the TMEA State Clinic and Convention in San Antonio, February 14-18, to rehearse and perform with the state's top musicians. Congratulations to these outstanding students, their directors, and their private lesson teachers. We are extremely proud of you!

Ryan HS Dance Teacher, Roxanne Muncy, Nominated for Lifetime Achievement Award from TDEA

RHS Dance Teacher, Roxanne Muncy, was nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Dance Educators Association at the 2019 TDEA Convention. Mrs. Muncy continues to be an outstanding teacher, leader, and advocate for dance in Denton ISD and the State of Texas. All of the Denton ISD dance teachers attended the convention and supported Mrs. Muncy at the award presentation. She and Ryan HS colleague, Keli Jones, also presented a workshop at the TDEA Convention titled, "Dancing Around the World." Congratulations to Mrs. Muncy for being recognized by TDEA. We are thankful for her dedication to her dance students and for her leadership in our district and our state!

Mariachi Workshop Jan 16 with Denton HS, McMath MS, Strickland MS, and Special Guests from Grand Prairie ISD

On January 16, Denton HS Mariachi Los Broncos hosted a mariachi workshop for students and teachers from DHS, McMath MS, and Strickland MS. The workshop was conducted by special guest, Marta Ocampo, director of the Mariachi Sol Azteca at Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy. Under Ms. Ocampo's direction, the Mariachi Sol Azteca has received numerous awards and accolades including winning Mariachi Nationals of Jose Hernandez, placing 2nd in the Texas Association of Mariachi Educators Mariachi State Finals, and a 1st division at the UIL State Mariachi Festival. Denton ISD mariachi students and teachers learned about performance practices, traditions, vocabulary, and stylistic nuances of mariachi. This hands-on workshop allowed the Denton ISD students and teachers to learn from Ms. Ocampo and her students from Grand Prairie and for all the participants for perform together. Many thanks to the Denton ISD mariachi directors for making this possible for our students: Julianne Booth and Carrie Atkins (Denton HS), Michael Burris and Michael Dandron (Strickland MS), and Gina Segapeli (McMath MS).

Myers MS Hosts Adopt an Artist, Jan 17, 5-7pm

Myers Middle School will be hosting "Operation: Adopt and Artist" on Thursday, January 17, 5:00-7:00pm, in the Myers MS Cafeteria. It will be a meet-and-greet event in which young artists from the Stephens Elementary School Kindergarten can find their original 2D works of art and meet a 7th or 8th grade artist from Myers MS who created a 3D version of their artwork. The Kindergarten artists will be able to take home their art as well as the rendered 3D pieces. This will be an exciting event for all of the student artists and families. Many thanks to Myers MS art teacher, Dashia Richey, and Stephens Elementary art teacher, Megan Trammell, for coordinating this event.

Denton ISD hosts the TMEA All-Region Band Concerts at Guyer HS on January 18. The concerts are free for audience members to hear the most outstanding band students from Region 2. The concert schedule is:

Ryan High School Theatre presents Legally Blonde the Musical on Thursday, January 17th and Friday, January 18th at 7:00PM and Saturday, January 19th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm in the Ryan High School Auditorium. DHS Fine Arts Presents Cinderella, Jan 24-26, Jan 31-Feb 2

The Denton High School Fine Arts Department is proud to present a Broadway classic, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. Make plans to bring the whole family to watch Cinderella and the Prince Topher fall in love at the ball! Performances are January 24 - 26, and January 31 - February 2 at 7pm in the Denton HS Auditorium. The show begins at 7pm, with house opening at 6:30pm. Vocal Majority in Concert with Guyer Choir at GHS, Feb 9, 7PM

Come see the world-champion Barbershop Chorus, Vocal Majority, perform at Guyer High School on Saturday, February 9th, at 7:00pm. Over 150 singers from the Chorus will be joined by several Guyer choirs for an unforgettable evening of babershop music and contemporary a cappella. Five DISD Teachers to Present Clinics at TMEA State Convention

The Texas Music Educators Association holds its annual Clinic/Convention in San Antonio, February 13-16. It is the largest music education convention of its kind with almost 30,000 attendees. Denton ISD is proud to have four of our outstanding music teachers invited by TMEA to present clinics and share their knowledge and experience with their colleagues at the convention.


Braswell HS Orchestra Director, Sam Flippin, will share his expertise as a cellist and teacher in his clinic titled, "Beginning Cellists: Striking the Balance."


Strickland MS Choir Directors, Amy Logan and Vinny Thomas, will explain how they effectively implement Google technology into their choir classroom with their clinic, "Make It Work! Practical Applications of Google for Your Choir."


McMath MS Band Director, Travis Harris, will present a how-to clinic on the do's and don'ts of forming and building a school jazz program in his clinic, "Starting a Jazz Band? No Problem!" Mr. Harris will also be leading the McMath Jazz Band in their featured concert as the TMEA Invited Jazz Ensemble.


Wilson Elementary Music Teacher, David Rowland, will co-present a clinic with colleague, Kara Nelson, from Valley Creek Elementary in McKinney ISD, titled, "Music Literacy Fun with Fifth Grade".
