April 2021
From the Desk of Sean Dorsey
Sand Creek Zone Families,
It is hard to believe we are in the final stretch of the 2020-2021 school year. What a year it has been! Yes, it has been challenging for students, staff, and parents. Yet, the pandemic has presented opportunities. I am proud of our Sand Creek Zone community. More specifically, our schools and families partnered to do the very best for our learners under difficult circumstances. Moving forward, close partnership among families and schools is what will take the Sand Creek Zone to the next level in providing students with an excellent place to learn.
The end of the school year brings with it celebration, prom, award ceremonies, senior banquet, and graduation. Although state and county health guidelines will undoubtedly morph our plans, we won't be stymied altogether. Rest assured, Sand Creek Zone staff is hard at work to provide as "normal" of a season of celebrations and traditions as possible. Showcasing our learners is important to us.
We know you have choices in where and how you educate your student(s). Thank you for trusting us to provide a great place for your child to learn.

EES Literacy Event
Evans Elementary staff and students celebrated Read Across America on March 2, with free books and an after-school drive-thru event.
Teachers gave away bundles of books for every family to take home, and popcorn and hot chocolate were also shared with families, for them to enjoy together during reading time at home. Local vendors were also invited to attend. Displays by community partner organizations like the Pikes Peak Library District, and the Children's Museum were on hand with free giveaways, and to share their resources with visitors.
Angelica Marquez, the family/community liaison, did a lot to bring in community partners from across the community to participate. The literacy coach for the school, Lori McCoy, was also credited by Marcia Case, school principal, for her efforts in organizing and putting much of the celebration together for the school. Virtual Author Visits at Springs Ranch
For World Read Aloud Day in February Mrs. Bedell coordinated with 4 authors from around the US to meet virtually with all of the classes at Springs Ranch. It was a great success! Students prepared questions for the authors ahead of time and classrooms spent time in shared reading experiences with the author's books prior to the visit. The positive energy around reading and writing could be felt all over the building, with many students commenting that they could now see themselves as future book authors. Engagement was so high that there are plans for additional virtual author visits with individual classrooms this April.
Parent Academy Resources
Throughout the year, the Sand Creek Zone provides Parent Academies to our families. For our virtual events, we are able to record the presentation, and gain resources from our events. Most of those resources can be found on the Sand Creek Zone Page! Check them out at d49.org/sandcreekzone
