Welcoming Mr. Ed Waugh to Monomoy Regional High School!
Ed Waugh is our new custodian at MRHS and will begin on Tuesday, November 13th!
Ed Waugh was born in Framingham moved to Cape Cod when he was one month old, making him a "washashore by technicality" as he calls it. One of 9 children Ed and his family spent many summers with family at Eskasoni, a Mi'kmaq First Nation reservation on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. When not working you may find Ed on stage performing stand-up comedy all over the Northeast. He lives in a Centerville with his wife Kelly and his 2 household rabbits Stella and Bruno. Ed's favorite quote is "It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice"

Marine Science Students Conduct Research in Cape Cod Bay
This week, students in Ms. Picariello's Marine Science class headed out on the water onboard the Albatross fishing/research vessel out of Sesuit Harbor, Dennis. While onboard, students built ocean drifters and deployed them in the bay. Attached to these drifters are tracking devices that will allow us to follow their location and movement in an effort to better understand the currents in Cape Cod Bay (You can follow our drifters here:
https://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/drifter/drift_audubon_2018_1.html).
Over the coming months, students will be working directly with scientists at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (WBWS), in collaboration with the University of Rhode Island, to gather data on ocean currents The purpose of this study is to correlate ocean currents to sea turtle strandings on Cape Cod beaches during the winter. Sea turtles get cold-stunned (severe hypothermia) and wash up on shore if they don't migrate south before the water temperatures drop. In the fall/winter they get stuck in Cape Cod Bay and wash up in the hundreds to thousands as they drift with the currents and get pushed to shore.
The excitement of the day was when we were heading back to shore and spotted a drifting cold-stunned Kemps Ridley turtle in the water. Thanks to our students being on this trip, the turtle (an endangered species) was rescued in time to be rehabilitated and released in warmer waters. Special thanks to Joel, Ben, and Felicia from the WBWS as well as Captain Chip and his crew for allowing us the opportunity to get out on the water!
MRHS Sandscript visit to HES and CES October 2018
On Halloween, seven members of our creative writing club, SANDSCRIPT, made the annual trip to Harwich and Chatham elementary schools to visit Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. These talented writers wrote and illustrated their own stories of Halloween magic outside of the school day. Please find a folder of photos taken by Joy Jordan of our visit attached.
Special Shark Shout Out to Olivia Appleton, Emily Fratus, Kyla Gilley, Sarah Messinger, Syla Ziemba, Brogan Rickman, and Marina Blaksteen for making great storybooks. Thanks also to Laura Hornsby for working with Brogan on a great story even though she couldn't make the trip.
Thanks also to the teachers who invited us in: Susan Rusch, Anna Melillo, Dawn King, Brandi Frommeyer, Janice Campbell-Schofield, and Sandy Hanson
All five Halloween stories are on display for two weeks at the top of the Main Street staircase. Please read and enjoy!

Athletics Weekly Summary
Week of: October 29th-November 2nd
Written by: Caroline Howard
It’s beginning to look a lot like….. Well folks it’s not that time of year yet! However, grab your favorite costume and pillow sack and hit the streets! That’s right! It’s Halloween week! It’s also tournament time for our fall sports teams, so things are about to get scary! I would say the stakes for these games are raised as high as Dolly Parton’s hair! Hold onto your hats, or shall I say heads, folks!
To start off our Halloween edition, we have to rewind to Friday’s games. Now, fans watching this game must’ve felt like they were sitting in an ice box! Despite the weather, the Girls Soccer team played against the Nauset Warriors. Boy a game this was! The Sharks started strong in the first half, popping one in the net very early on. But, the Warriors ultimately came back and scored 4 goals pushing them to a win. Nice effort Sharks! Way to play strong!
Field Hockey also played a close game on Friday against the Barnstable Red Raiders. It was also the Field Hockey teams Senior Night for their two senior captains, Aoife Daly and myself! A quick thank you to all of the family and friends that came out to support us! We couldn’t have made it through all five years without you guys! As we rolled onto the field, the Sharks were hungry to pop a few in the net. Coach Estes of the Monomoy Sharks, main goal for the game was pushing the offense. But, the Red Raiders came out and put three behind the Sharks that won them the game! A solid effort by the whole Shark team! Way to play hard!
Field Hockey also continued into the weekend for their Sunday game on Nantucket. The Sharks came out strong and finished the game with the final score of 6-0. Goals scored by Jane Howard, Carly Dimock, Caroline DiGiovanni, and Aoife Daly with a hat trick! This game pushed the team to become Cape and Islands League Champions! Way to work girls!
On Monday, Girls Soccer didn’t have the blues! The Girls faced off against Saint John Paul in a very close game. At the half, the score still read zip-to-zip. However, Monomoy’s Maggie Dever came back and popped both goals in the net! Dever’s assists came from Abby Higgins and Melissa Velasquez! This was also the girls last regular season game for the fall! Great win girls, and good luck in tournament!
Boys Soccer also played SJP on Monday. This game was ruthless, both teams striving to get a better seed in tournament! The boys played a great game against the Saint John Paul but could not hold on to the tie game. SJP came back and scored two goals, making the final score 2-0. You’ll get them next time boys!
Careful! Here comes Cross Country! These speed demons walked out of their League meet on Tuesday with a great score overall. The Sharks nine lady runners finished 3rd, and the boys seventeen runners finished 5th. The gals top runner for the meet was senior Caroline Davock! Davock sprinted into the finish line at a time of 23:47! Wow! Maybe she can give me some lessons! Francesca Marchesi and Margarette Dery followed with times of 23:58 and 24:00! Shortly after came Emily Blake, Julia Rioux, Abigale Tyldesley and Madeline Pitts! The girls overall combined times came to 2: 03: 12! Nice job! You all sure are fast, but hopefully it's not the same on the highway!
As for our gentlemen, the boys top runner was junior Steven Young at a time of 18:20! Holy smokes! Individually, Young came came in 6th place. Way to go! Ryder Robbins followed Young with a time of 18:59, then Quinn Schuyler, Daniel Street, Aidan Melton, Douglas Ulrich, Sean Owen, Charles McGrath, Jarrett Strzepek, Brandon Willis, James Kiernan, and Sam Yuskaitis! Great run boys and a great overall score of 1:40:21! Woohoo!
It was a sad day on Wednesday as the Field Hockey team played their last game of the season. As the girls traveled to Falmouth, they played a tough game against the Clippers for their first tournament game. This grassy field was a tough one for the Sharks to adjust to! The Sharks started off strong, but in the end, Falmouth came out for the win, 2-0. Great effort by the Field Hockey team on Wednesday, as well as the whole season! Way to fight for it gals!
Don’t worry folks, it's not the end yet! We still have our spiffy soccer teams who both play this Sunday at the Shark tank! To start off our Sunday morning, grab your coffee because Girls Soccer faces Rising Tide at 12 o’clock sharp! This is going to be one exciting game as both teams play in their first State Tournament game for the season! Make sure you come out and support your Sharks! After Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer plays South Shore Christian at 3:00! These two teams are sure to both bring their A-game as again, the State Tournament games are high stakes! These Sharks could sure use your support so make sure you all come out on Sunday!
Well, that’s all for today folks! As always, I am Caroline Howard and I will be coming at you next week with more Fall Sports results! Stay warm out there and Go Sharks!
