Welcome Back!
New Lakeshore Middle School Staff
Ms. Jonatzke brings a wealth of Science content knowledge and unique teaching experiences with her. She is a graduate of Lakeshore Public Schools and Central Michigan University. We are glad to have her back in LPS and look forward to the amazing work she will do with our students.
Mr. Joel Hosey, MS Band
Originally from Ovett, Mississippi. Mr. Hosey received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. After graduating from DSU, Joel accepted the position of assistant band director for one year before becoming Director of Bands for the Meridian Public School District in Meridian, Mississippi. Mr. Hosey taught in St. James Parish in Louisiana for one year. After leaving Louisiana, Joel returned to Mississippi and completed his Master of Music Education with a concentration in Woodwind Pedagogy from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. For the past two years, Mr. Hosey was the southwest band representative for Marshall Music Company serving 25 bands in southwest Michigan.
Joel is married to Kaitlin Hosey and they have DOGhter named Ella. In their free time, they enjoy foraging and working around their 27 acre farm and traveling across Michigan looking for the mysterious Andouille sausage, dry black-eyed peas, country ham, and properly sweeten tea. Joel looks forward to teaching the students at Lakeshore and discovering new places in the area.
Mr. Matt Pagel, HS/MS Band
Mr. Pagel, a 2001 graduate of Lakeshore, is one of the new band directors and is starting his 13th year of teaching. Most recently he served for 5 years as Band Director for Brandon HS & MS in Ortonville, MI. Prior to that, he taught in Hartford, MI and Middletown, DE. Mr. Pagel earned his Master of Music degree in conducting from WMU in 2013 and a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from MSU in 2006. He just married his wife Kirsten this summer. She is a music teacher as well in the River Valley School district. They have a (very neurotic) dog named Barry and couldn't be more excited to be teaching in SW Michigan!
Ms. Allsion Arend, Assistant Principal
Ms. Arend comes to us from Berrien Springs where she spent her time teaching middle school Social Studies. She received degrees from Hope College and Michigan State University. Ms. Arend is going to be a great addition to Lakeshore Middle School and is already making a positive impact. You can read her introduction letter here.
Mr. Jonathan Swegles: I am proud to have the opportunity to lead Lakeshore Middle School as Principal after serving as Assistant Principal the previous year. We have an outstanding staff, wonderful students, and support parents so when the opportunity arrived to move offices with Mr. Messenger's departure to Portage Public Schools, I immediately expressed interest. I look forward to making deeper connections with our students and staff so that great learning and instruction can continue to progress.
