Gifted & Talented Monthly Update
Cimarron Middle School - September/October 2015
Introduction
My name is Jenifer Nerwin and I am the Gifted and Talented Facilitator at Cimarron. I am thrilled to serve in this role for the second year. I have been lucky enough to be a part of the Legend Feeder system for the past 10 years as a parent and for the past 7 years as a teacher. Both of my boys are identified as gifted, so I have been a part of the Gifted and Talented community in the Legend Feeder since my boys attended Pioneer Elementary years ago.
I wear many hats at Cimarron, but all of them center around one main goal - supporting the personalized learning needs of students. One of my goals this year is to increase communication about gifted and talented programming and opportunities with all stakeholders. I plan to send out communication once a month to families. I hope you find the information helpful! I'm sure you may get some of the information contained here through several different channels. If so, I apologize for the repetition but want to make sure it gets to you.
Here's our first newsletter!

Upcoming Events
Destination Imagination Introduction Nights
Introduction night for Destination Imagination (DI) - a creative problem solving program for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Teams of 5-7 students are formed to solve program challenges and are managed by a parent Team Manager.
DI challenges are heavily anchored in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, however, all the challenges incorporate the arts as well. Destination Imagination is, and always has been, moving full STEAM ahead into the future!
Destination Imagination programming complements K-12 education by fostering curiosity, courage and creativity. Students become enthusiastic "self-starters" who take charge of their own learning.
These nights are designed to provide information to parents about the Destination Imagination Program.

Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) Update
Beginning of the Year ALP Process at Cimarron
Once students finish their part of the ALP, teachers will add information about the programming that is put in place to address the needs of the student and to support student growth and progress towards their academic and affective ALP goals.
Teachers will then share the ALP digitally with parents. Set a time to look over your son or daughter's ALP with them and to add information in the Parent section. Your input and collaboration is an important part of this process! Thank you, in advance, for your input!
