Falco March 8th-12th
2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Falcon Families!
There is a lot we are asking families to do this week and we have a packed newsletter! Happy reading!
Forecasting forms are due March 15. Current 6th and 7th grade students will have had the opportunity to hear about forecasting for next year from Five Oaks Counselors in addition to counselors from the other middle schools. The forms can be found on Canvas. There are a few changes for next year including a new schedule, the addition of Choir, and a Career Exploration class for 8th grade students. Please talk to your student about what they would like to forecast for and have them fill out the google form. We ask students to rank elective options in order of preference because there are situations where students do not get their first choice.
Indicating your preference for hybrid or CDL is also due March 15. In order to make your selection, please go into ParentVue and click on the “Family Updates and New Student Enrollment” button. The system should walk you through some questions as if you’re enrolling your student. (If you need to update any contact information, that would be a great time to do that!) You’ll get to a screen with a drop down menu in the center that ask if you want in person hybrid or if you want to remain in CDL. After you have made the selection, please make sure to save your responses! Below is some important information on what we are currently looking at for both CDL and hybrid. Please read before making your decision for your student and family.
CDL is an option for the rest of the school year. CDL will look similar to what it is now with both synchronous and asynchronous opportunities for students. Teachers will be working with both in person and online students simultaneously which could impact response time. It will also mean that students need to log in at the right time to their classes, as it will be more challenging to constantly monitor the waiting room.
Hybrid has some nuances that are important for everyone to understand.
Students will remain in their assigned classroom the majority of the day in order to maintain stable cohorts. Teachers will move to the students, sanitizing between cohorts. This means that students and teachers on the same team will be assigned rooms very close to one another.
Students will need to stay in their area. Each student will have an assigned seat that will be their space for hybrid. They will each have a container to put any school supplies in they may need so they don’t have to transport between home and school, which will help eliminate potential germ contamination. Students will need to bring their chromebooks and charger daily and will need to make sure to charge their chromebooks the night before. If they bring a backpack they will keep it at their desk area.
All meals will be provided to students free of charge. Students will have a lunch period in the cafeteria. We will stagger lunches, meaning half of the students assigned to that lunch will eat and then have recess and the other half will have recess and then eat. We are working on plans to have students separated by cohort during recess to eliminate cross contamination. If students choose to bring food from home, this must remain in their backpacks until lunch time. Please send lunches in disposable containers. At the end of each day, students will receive meals to take home that will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the following 1-3 days depending on their attendance group.
Students will be assigned to either a Monday/Thursday attendance group or a Tuesday/Friday attendance group. At this time, I can’t tell you what cohort your students are in. Depending on numbers we may have to do some balancing and I want to ensure we give out accurate information when it’s available.
In Encore and PE, two cohorts will be combined to make one larger class (as they already are in CDL). In these larger spaces, we will still keep cohorts separate to the greatest extent possible. This model does fit within the guidelines outlined by OHA, ODE, and BSD of having students interact with 100 or fewer students within the school day per week.
We will continue to provide all Encore classes in hybrid including band. There will have to be some modification with how we have traditionally done some of these courses and we are still fine tuning the details of that. Stay tuned for more on that!
Students and staff will be required to wear masks while on the bus and in the building. The only exception is for eating and drinking. We know this isn’t everyone’s favorite thing to do, but it is essential to keeping everyone safe. A face shield does not satisfy the mask requirement but can be worn in addition to a mask if so desired.
We are placing floor markings and decals around the building to help with social distancing and to make sure we have a safe flow of people through the halls and we have sanitizing stations placed throughout the building as well.
Students will spend time the first week of hybrid learning the protocols for being in the building. We will also have a heavy emphasis on reacclimating to being in school - it’s been a year since we’ve been able to gather like this!
Whether CDL or hybrid, student schedules will have to change. Rachel Carson students will now be in school from 8-2, whereas Five Oaks students will continue with the 10-3:50 time. In order to account for the lunches the start and end times that are currently in place for CDL will not be feasible. We will release our finalized schedule as soon as we can. It is still part of the bargaining process between BEA and BSD and may need minor adjustments.
Protocols for sanitizing spaces are still being finalized as we adapt to ever changing guidance.
Transportation will be provided but routes will not be released until after the survey closes so transportation has an opportunity to route efficiently with accurate data. Busses will be running with reduced capacity and with sanitizing protocols in place. Everyone on a bus will need to wear a mask.
Because of increased needs for transportation, the last day for the book bus will be March 17.
This also means that meal delivery via bus will soon end after spring break. We will still be doing curbside meals for any students 18 and under in BSD.
There are still an incredible amount of unknowns that we are working through and getting guidance about. As soon as we can push information out to you all we will, but please be patient with the process.
One of the concerns that has come up recently is monitoring student devices. A very recent development with the lightspeed system allows parents to click a link on their weekly lightspeed parent report to create an account on the lightspeed portal. This portal will allow them to block after school internet access, and also be able to view their student’s internet history on demand. There is a note to families that should go out on Monday in the BSD Weekly to families. IT has created a Parent Portal FAQ which hopefully will answer any questions parents have around the new portal.
We have a few events this week to note:
