pH Indicator
How to use an indicator
The pH indicator
The pH indicator that was used if this experiment was a bunch of red cabbage leaves that have been put into a blender in order to create red cabbage water. The indicator that was used is also very natural. Because it is just red cabbage, there is no addition to it making t completely natural.
What is a pH indicator, and what is pH ?
A pH indicator shows how high and low the pH levels are in a substance. Also pH is measurement of the acidity or alkalinity levels in a substance.
How to tell what is a alkaline and what is an acid
There is a pH spectrum and it ranges in colors and it corresponds with how toxic or how deadly the substance can be.
Whats the difference in colors?
The spectrum ranges from dark red all the way to dark blue showing the pure extremes . The middle and the least toxic color is green which shows that the substance is neutral.
why is red cabbage a pH indicator
Red cabbage contains a pigment molecule called flavin which is an anthocyanin which causes the color change and it is water soluble.
Why did we do it this way?
The reason why we used vinegar and baking soda is because they're both a mild acid and base which would react well with a pH indicator. You can recreate this reaction with just house hold items and that is why this is amazingly fun to do and easy to do as well.
