From the Principal:
Dear Parents and Families,
Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family had a very joyous holiday season and that you are looking forward to the coming year! At Midland, we have been preparing for this year in many ways. Immediately upon our return, our LAP staff will be doing our winter benchmark testing. The purpose of this quick assessment is to check the progress of our students’ basic reading and math skills. Information gathered from our benchmarking will inform our instructional practices for the coming months.
One of the values of being a Kids at Hope school is that we “time travel” to our future to determine the skills we need to be successful. We want our students to know where they are with learning the standards, and then we help them to progress so they can be successful. Although our teachers do not send home “new learning” for homework, you can certainly help your student to achieve success by keeping or starting some new year habits. Midland students should be reading (or being read to) for at least 20 minutes each night. Additionally, kindergarten students should be counting to 100, first and second grade students should be learning their addition and subtraction facts, third grade students should know their multiplication facts, and our fourth and fifth grade students should be mastering multi-digit multiplication and division. Your support of these learning goals will help your child to succeed in the coming year!
Mustang Pride School-wide Behavior Program
Our new program asks students to follow our school rules and six classroom rules. These rules encompass our 4 Be's- Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Productive. We will continue to have our Midland Pride Tickets, Marvelous Mustang Club, MOJO assemblies, and classroom incentives and recognitions for students. The biggest change for our students will be that there is a pre-determined response to student misbehavior, so that we are consistent throughout the school. After a specific request for a student to "check their behavior," students who continue to misbehave will have to go to "think time." If misbehavior continues, they will miss part of a recess and they will have to call home to talk with a parent. We are hopeful that his step will cause students to change their behavior; however, if misbehavior continues, a student may miss classroom incentives or see the principal, and depending on the behavior, a parent conference may be set up.
As we first start our new plan, it is possible that your child will call home to talk with you. If this happens, we are requesting that you help your child in making better choices at school. We are asking for your partnership in helping your child to be successful.
Below you will see the school rules, classroom rules, and both positive and unpleasant consequences on the "What If" chart. Please ask your child about this as they learn about it through the week.
I want to thank you in advance for your support as we create more consistency of our school-wide expectations. Please let me know if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dawson
