Habits, Habits, Habits
One of the topics we discussed is our school environment. At first we discussed the students and how they treat each other. This was an easy topic to discuss, but because we were a solution focused group, we began discussing how do we help our students "act right." Someone brought up Leader in Me as an option for promoting successful behavior. We all said that was a great idea and moved on.
At our next meeting someone had the courage to speak up about Leader in Me. Her words were, "Leader in Me is just a program that doesn't really impact our kids." At first I thought I might throw something at her but then she continued, "It is kids using the 7 Habits that is the difference maker." That statement made me think. When we had our training to become a LIM school; the training wasn't focused on the decorations or leadership days. It was focused on teaching us to live the 7 Habits.
I have a saying that I always go back to....If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck.....it must be a duck. I use this saying often to illustrate that our actions speak much louder than any words we ever say. I share this because I have some difficult questions to ask you guys. Do you have the 7 habits? Do you naturally implement most or all of them on a daily basis? Do you believe that living by these habits can have a lasting impact on our students. If so, how are you helping our students to develop these habits in their lives.
Over the next few months, we will be stepping away from the LIM program and begin focusing on developing the 7 Habits in us and our students.
