School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
The Project Care focus for this whole month was on creating a bully free school. If you get a chance this week have a conversation with your student about how bullying effects everyone, not just the bully and the target, but the witnesses or bystanders also. Here is some information that might help guide your discussion:
Bullying hurts everyone involved:
The persons targeted by bullying behavior often feels humiliated, sad, angry, scared, and anxious. Because of this, they often try to avoid coming to school because they are fearful of seeing the bully. Reiterate with your student that if they should ever feel this way then they should talk to a trusted adult. See if they can give you some names of trusted adults at home and at school.
Students who witness or are a bystander to the bullying may feel frustrated, fearful, anxious and uncertain how to help, may start to feel guilty and partially responsible for the bullying, and sometimes may even become insensitive and take the side of the bully. One thing is for sure, when students witness bullying they do not feel safe and secure at school. Talk to your student about always being an Upstander and doing something to help the person who is being bullied and give them some examples on how they can help.
Students who bully others often get in trouble with the police, are more likely to steal and destroy things, and are more likely to use alcohol and drugs as they get older. They also have trouble keeping true friends because other students start to become distrustful of them. Try to help your student understand that how they treat others directly effects how others treat them and give them some examples.
We can help reduce and possibly eliminate bullying at Pendleton Elementary by responding to bullying in the appropriate way. If students are getting the same message at home as they are here at school then they will best be able to handle situations such as these in the future if they do come up.
Until next week……
