The Buzz at Westbrook
January 17, 2020
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
We are so appreciative of your generosity and support of the Kindness Club’s service project. Our first grade Kindness Ambassadors had an absolute BLAST organizing, bagging and loading all this food donated during the food drive. The food will be delivered to Northwest Compass and The Mount Prospect Food Pantry.
Thank you for your part in making Westbrook such a wonderful community ❤️
Professional Learning
This afternoon, our kindergarten and first grade teachers will be diving into further discussions about writing workshop and our new writing curriculum. We look forward to applying our knowledge in our work with students. The goal of the writing workshop model is to prepare students for any writing task that they will face and to turn kids into lifelong confident writers.
Benchmarking
Along with teacher observations, parent feedback, and students’ daily classroom work, benchmark assessments are used to inform teachers’ instruction to meet students’ individual learning needs. Our team is currently working on benchmarking all kindergarten and first grade early literacy and math skills.
The information teachers receive about each child’s reading and math ability will be used to inform their instruction and monitor individual student growth. All K-1st students will be reassessed on these skills in the spring in order to measure growth.
STEAM Night
Mark your calendars! We are excited to offer a special STEAM Night for Westbrook Families on Thursday, March 12. (STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.) Your entire family is welcome to attend! More information to come!
Enrollment for Kindergarten and Circle of Friends

Note From The Nurse...
Just a reminder of our district policy when your child is allowed to return to school after being ill, or when a doctor's note is required.
A child must be:
Fever free for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication)
No vomiting for 24 hours
No diarrhea for 24 hours
This is a must before sending your child back to school.
Any rash or skin eruption must have a doctor's note stating that your child is not contagious and can be at school.
Also, please notify the school of your child’s illness when the absence is reported. A notification letter may need to be sent out to the rest of your child’s class pending the illness.
Please notify the nurse should your child have any type of cast, sling, elastic bandage wrap, and/or stitches after an injury. A doctor’s note is required whether or not your child may participate in PE and recess.
Thank you for your cooperation!
