Special Education Para Educators Needed!

Deerfield is in need of two special needs para-educators. If you know anyone who might be interested, please ask them to apply on our district website as soon as possible (use QR code to access).

Educator of the Month

Midco Educator of the Month

As you may know from previous years, Midco teams with other local businesses to help honor educators and all they do. This year’s co-sponsors are Papa Keno’s Pizzeria and Envista Credit Union.

This program awards one educator a month through May and then one of those lucky winners is named the Educator of The Year. This award acknowledges teachers for all their hard work throughout the year. This program has been very well received over the years and we could not be more excited to be able to get our teachers the attention and recognition they deserve!

You can always nominate at:

Hy-Vee High 5 is Back!!

Student Picture Proofs Delivered

Picture proofs were delivered to classroom teachers to send home with students this week. Due to an ink shortage at Strawbridge Photography they were not able to print order forms. If you would like to order pictures you will need to order them online.

Our goal is for students to see themselves in our change makers and to also learn that they can do anything they put their mind to. Another goal is for our students to see people who are unfamiliar to them, to grow in empathy, and push for justice for the inequalities that marginalized communities face.

11/1-11/5 - Louis Braille

11/8-11/12- Sharice Davids

11/15-11/19- LeBron James

11/22-11/23- Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte

11/29-12/3- Campbell Remess

Covid Reminders From Nurse Dianne

Dear Deerfield Parents,

I want to remind parents to please continue to monitor your child for symptoms of COVID-19 each day and DO NOT send your student to school if they are not feeling well OR are exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19. If your child is exhibiting symptoms please contact your healthcare provider OR have them tested at a local Covid-19 testing center. There are local testing sites in Lawrence that offer free Antigen or PCR COVID-19 testing. Visit to obtain a list of testing sites in our area. You can also contact me for a free PCR saliva test kit.

As a reminder, please remember that allergy symptoms and cold and flu symptoms mirror those of COVID-19. Please do not assume your child’s symptoms are attributed to a “common cold” or “their typical allergy symptoms,” and please keep your child home if any of these symptoms are present.

COVID-19 symptoms include:

  • New loss of taste/smell

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing

  • Sore throat

  • Fatigue

  • Congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Headache

  • Muscle or body aches

  • Fever or chills

  • Nausea/Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

As always, thank you for practicing these safety measures and I hope we can stay healthy and continue to protect one another.

Dianne Thomas, RN, Deerfield School Nurse

Penny War Kicks off in November

Put your spare change towards a great cause! From November 15-19, Deerfield students will participate in a Penny War! All proceeds will help Just Food fight hunger in Douglas County.

Here's how it works: each classroom will have two jars on a table located by the main entrance of the school, one for pennies and one for silver coins. Each penny collected counts as a positive point-put those in your jar! Silver coins are negative so dropping a quarter in another class' jar takes away 25 points from their total! At the end of the day on November 19, all change will be counted. To learn more about Just Food, visit

Deerfield T-Shirt Update

PTO will be handing out shirt and mask orders in the Deerfield drive on November 12. This is a tentative date so please keep your eyes out for an additional email to confirm this.

Congrats to October Hy-Vee High 5 Winner Mrs. Humburg

Mrs. Humburg is one of Deerfield’s Kindergarten teachers and was nominated by Charlotte Wagner and Ian Gillum. Charlotte thinks Mrs. Humburg deserves a High 5 because she “teaches good in math and she is a really good teacher. She is very kind. She gives us fun things to do.” Ian says he thinks Mrs. Humburg deserves a High 5 because “If I’m having a bad day or missing my mom, she makes me feel happy.” Congratulations to Mrs. Humburg!

Nominations for November are open! Tell us who you think deserves a High 5 by completing this online Google form:

The nominating student and winning staff member will receive prizes, donated by Hy-Vee, and will be celebrated in this newsletter.
