History of the Fad Diet

The origin and inspiration for the Mediterranean style of diet came from many European and Middle Eastern cuisines over the course of centuries. The Rockefeller Foundation conducted a research study of the region and the research and expedition was led by Leland Allbaugh. They explored and surveyed the island of Crete where the diet became a foundation for medical research and fad diet use.

The diet has been proven to be extremely beneficial and healthy when used in a moderate manner. The Mediterranean diet was used after Ancel Key´s Seven Countries study was used for soldiers during a starvation study in WW2. He was supposed to study the affects of starvation and the depletion it does on the body and his job was to determine food ration proportions needed to keep soldiers healthy during wartime. He found after surveying the survivors after war deprived of their rations, heart attacks decreased significantly. The main culprit was high consumption of red meats. It was shown that Japanese and Greek men having one of the lowest rates of Cardiovascular disease with the island of Crete having the lowest

What is the Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is composed of a low red meat intake while taking sweets mostly out of your diet and eating fish a few times a week, a bowl of fruits and vegetables each meal, and to incorporate grains, beans/nuts, cheese and yogurt, 6 glasses of water, and even some wine daily. The component that is most often discussed for its beneficial health effects is the olive oil but in high consumption has lots of calories and used sparingly in the diet. Also thirty minutes or more of cardiovascular exercise is highly recommended for better results for the diet.

Why it is/isn´t healthy

Healthy: It is healthy because it has unsaturated oils that are protective towards the heart; saturated oils or fats can be damaging to the heart and clog blood vessels and arteries overtime. Fish oils, olive oil and nut and seed oils. The low fat substances with integration of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, less red meat and poultry decreases the risks for heart attack, stroke, increase mood, and prevent type 2 diabetes.

Unhealthy: The diet can be unhealthy at times with high intakes of olive oil and the high calorie foods of dairies within the diet. Anyone wishing to partake in this diet needs to consult their doctor because allergens to seeds, nuts, fish, etc. can prove fatal.
