Meet the Teacher
Heather Marshall
The Basics
This will be my 17th year teaching in the John Swett Unified School District. I have taught every grade (k-8), but middle school is by far my favorite. I like finding ways to make learning fun by infusing technology, games, and art into the curriculum.
My Education
I Love Learning
I earned my BA in Elementary Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. My minor was in Social Studies and I also earned a k-6 reading specialist credential. In 2003, I went back to school and earned my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. This year I am working towards earning an administrative credential. I love being a student as much as I love being a teacher. I am always on the lookout for new learning opportunities to help me become a better teacher; whether it's taking an online class, reading a professional book, or going to a conference. My focus is currently on using technology to engage students and improve their learning experience.
My Childhood
When I Grow Up...
I was born in Iowa, but I grew up in Southern California. My family lives in Iowa on our family farm where they raise cows, chickens, and sheep in addition to growing corn and soybeans. I like the farm for visiting, but I prefer living in California.
I always wanted to be a teacher, even as a child. I was a gymnast, an artist, a tap dancer, and a beauty queen. I had brothers, but I always wished for a sister.
My Family
I live in Martinez with my two daughters, Sasha and Kacie. Sasha just graduated from high school and is a talented artist. When Sasha goes to college she wants to study genetics or bio-engineering. Kacie is just starting high school and she is a 5'10" basketball player. She wants to be a farmer or a lawyer when she grows up. Neither one of my kids love reading the way I do, but they are still good students. I keep trying to find that perfect book that is finally going to turn them into "readers". We are mostly "girlie girls" and we like shopping, shoes, and pedicures. We also like getting dirty on backpacking, camping, and fishing trips.
Family Games
Professor Plum, in the library, with the candlestick: Clue is Kacie's Favorite.
Six Flags
Sasha likes the coasters. Kacie likes getting wet. Mom likes the funnel cake.
Our Princess
This is our baby, Maddy the Puggle. Her favorite things are breakfast, dinner, and barking at squirrels.
My Favorites
Star Wars gets it's own category and top billing.
I have a light saber and am the Star Wars Trivia Pursuit champion in my family. I never win the Star Wars monopoly game; and even though it's Star Wars, I don't like that game very much. I celebrate May the 4th. My favorite character is Han Solo, and my favorite movie was the one with the Ewoks.
